Sorry, early today!

Are You The Family Tech-Guy?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-12 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I have absolutely no formal training with computers aside from having used them for 12 years (since we first got the internet when I was 12). Yet in my home, I'm the tech-girl-guy. The internet went down? It's my problem, and my problem alone. Never-mind that the solution was to flip the switch on the power strip and off. Where my parents are concerned, I can do some kind of magic interneting. It gets very frustrating when I'm faced with them having downloaded a jillion viruses and can't even get on the computer to fix it.

How about you?

same situation here. I've used computers for... 16 years. I moved out three years ago and it's still somehow my fault that the family computer is slow.

I can tell you why it's slow:
a) it's simply a shitty cheap supermarket computer (and old, too)
b) my dad regularly googles "computer is slow" and clicks the first three links with downloads that should fix it (cough, malware). I remove it all every time I visit. when I come back -- it's back, too. he is also convinced that each icon next to the clock uses up ALL THE RAM and I have to tell him every time that no, I will not uninstall our anti-virus application because it has a little icon.
c) Windows Vista

...at least he doesn't want me to download RAM, I guess?

edit: he also uses the AOL browser.

it's really sad. on speedtest.net or wherever, there's a banner ad that looks very much like part of the site that goes "USE THIS APP TO DELETE ALL THE BAD USELESS FILES FROM YOUR PC FIRST!!!!!1!!". of course he clicks that.

I mean, most of ~us (young people!) can easily distinguish a banner ad from a legit part of a website OR know how to hide ads completely... the only time I have trouble with that is when I want to download stuff and there's 300 "download" buttons and the site itself has no overall distinguishable theme. then I hover and look at the URLs, so... lksdfjldsfadsjfl

I think I have to give him some sort of The Talk soon. "father, there are bad people websites on the internet... and very often they pretend to be something that they are not..."

Dear GOD, the AOL browser? WHY?

Get him Firefox and Chrome with adblock or something. Serious, good god D:

200 years ago we used AOL internet because it was literally the ~only place that offered internets where we lived. We only switched over like five years ago... So I guess he got used to it?

I installed Opera and it's set as the default browser, but he still believes it's necessary to use AOL to get connected to the internet............

It can be worse. Think dial-up internet and making sure no one else is on the phone first XD

How much porn do your parents watch?

My SO is the tech guy because I get easily irritated with computer issues.

Ha ha. I got really, really careful about what I searched for and where I looked on my dad's computer. I know he's probably a porn addict, but I don't want to actually know what he gets off on. *shudder*

Of course. I should actually be writing a paper about Project Management right now.

My father usually comes to me with his problems, but my sister is the tech-person in the family because she actually does know how to fix things with a computer.
For the 11 years I've been using computers, my only progress is that I no longer get viruses and mess up computer software.

I am the opposite of this.

The rest of my family all work heavily in IT, and every time I call them for tech advice it ends with completely jargon explanations.

My dad's the tech guy since he works with computers, I ask him for help when I have computer issues. and I'm always paranoid that he's checking up on me.

I remember him teaching me how to hack in counter strike when I was 12

My older brother's a programmer, so I was safe for most of my youth.

Until he moved away and I stayed in the same city, now it's my turn to be the family Help Desk.

Yep, I have worked with computers since 2000 or so, some formal training but not much, and I am the go-to with my mother on her computer problems. I always tell her if I could walk a problem with her over the phone I would be working as tech-support somewhere and making big moneys.

My parents can barely use a cell phone (and not to it's full capacity) and the tv guide confuses them, so yes, if something requires setting up or pressing more than a button or two it's my job.

I'm the heavy duty OS install/virus removal/anti-malware dude, yep.

Re: Are You The Family Tech-Guy?

In my house, yeah. In the family it's equal between me and my bro depending on the issue.

No formal training, but people come to me o_o even though half the time it's just a powersurge (oooold house) and switches just need to be flipped on or our old modem needs to be turned off for a minute.

I'm a bit better at virus removal, but that's more practice from getting them than anything.

Yes.

This never works out well for anyone and I have no idea why they keep asking me. 99% of the time all I have to do is clear their browser cache, and the other 1% of the time I have to google the solution anyway.

I'm Tech Girl for both my family and my workplace. Every time anyone has an issue with their computer they always ask me, even though my only training is being on the computer a lot and the magical ability to do a Google search.

Re: Are You The Family Tech-Guy?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-13 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
HOLY SHIT THIS IS MY LIFE! I'm not techy at all. I usually have to ask techy friends to show me how to do stuff. But when the computer isn't making any sounds, my parents ask me to come fix it for them. It annoys me because my older brother knows more than I do about techy stuff.

Re: Are You The Family Tech-Guy?

I'm a tech girl in my family, and we also have a wannabe tech-guy.

I can do pretty much everything about repairing computers, removing viruses, formatting, getting replacements and giving advice about purchasing a laptop (thanks to my work in a computer sales and service company). However the people in my house think that the wannabe is better at it.

The wannabe is mainly about getting games to be played on an (otherwise) incompatible PCs and breaking them while he's at it. He doesn't know anything about repairing, and often got scammed by servicing companies he went to. And he *still* thinks those scammers did the job "well". (Last time his graphic card busted and he actually bought a new PC system. Whatever works, wannabe. Whatever works.)

At least the laptop I chose for a sister works even after 3 years. The one he chose for another got overheated only after 6 months.
