I'm fairly certain at least most of us can tell the difference between German Shepherds and bulldogs and the like (barring specific brain disorders), but our recognition patterns for dogs are essentially limited to size, shape, and color, unless you're very familiar with the breeds you're working with. Coat patterns and facial markings aren't something we generally notice because telling dog faces apart is not as essential to us as telling human faces apart is. That said, even when we can tell one dog apart from another, sometimes the difference isn't always something we'd be able to articulate outside of comparison - what you see as "bandit mask" may just be "more black on its face" to somebody else.
