Notes:

Sorry, early today!

Also: I'm not going to officially warn for tongue-in-cheek "triggers" just to provide anyone with a fandom-specific in-joke when there are none in the secret.

What I'm getting from this thread is that apparently most people can't tell dogs' faces apart. Media huskies really do look all alike to you? German Shepherds? Bulldogs? You scare me, internet. Too much time looking at cats.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-12 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Most people can tell the different between different dogs and breeds, but aren't familiar with particular types of markings. Not that strange.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-12 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
It is where I come from.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-12 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Did you grow up in a dog shelter?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-12 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Did all the cat people grow up in cat shelters? But seriously, everybody has dogs, wants dogs, knows dogs, values dogs, may not always take care of their dogs like they should, and I've taken in my share from the streets.

I'm not sure how this comment substantiates the claim that 'it is weird' to not know specific markings for all breeds of dogs, even if one is a dog person. The fact that someone is defending the idea that everyone from 'where they're from' can identify different facial markings of all different breeds is what I was responding to. I don't know what you're responding to. An affection for dogs is not what's being discussed.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-12 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Your 'discussion' sounded more like snark.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-12 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
it was snark, but the previous comment was still irrelevant to what the focus was, and thus worthless.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-12 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you feel better about yourself now?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-12 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Sounds to me like a population that's very familiar with dogs. You saw affection, I saw familiarity and therefore some probable knowledge. If OP lives among people who can pick out one doggy face in a canine crowd, they're going to consider that the norm.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-12 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
But not where the sane people live, dearie.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-13 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
Where do the sane people live, m'dear? Going by how y'all lost your shit in a hurry because one anon had a long day at work and decided to chuck seriousness to the wind, it ain't where you are.

AYRT - My dad bred and raised German Shorthairs growing up. Most of his friends raised or bred some type of hunting dog. I know about dogs, but I realize that most of the world are not as into dogs and the particulars of their markings as people who've had my upbringing. You're reaching for something to be pissed off about here, dude.

No, it just means that most people aren't exposed to a lot of movies featuring more than one dog of a specific race.
Hell, I love dogs, but the only "dog movies" I've seen or heard of are either movies for kiddies for Disney Channel, or buddy movies where a guy has to pair up with a dog for whatever reasons, without liking dogs, and the dog breaks a lot of things before making up for it by saving the day.

I tend to avoid them because they're too predictable and badly written.

So, I'm mostly surprised that someone would be watching enough of them to 1) rant about a facial marking stereotype 2) be surprised of the use of stereotypes in movies.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-12 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Not surprised, just roll-my-eyes tired of it.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-12 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm fairly certain at least most of us can tell the difference between German Shepherds and bulldogs and the like (barring specific brain disorders), but our recognition patterns for dogs are essentially limited to size, shape, and color, unless you're very familiar with the breeds you're working with. Coat patterns and facial markings aren't something we generally notice because telling dog faces apart is not as essential to us as telling human faces apart is. That said, even when we can tell one dog apart from another, sometimes the difference isn't always something we'd be able to articulate outside of comparison - what you see as "bandit mask" may just be "more black on its face" to somebody else.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-12 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
This, basically. I stared at the pic for a full minute trying to figure out what it was that "who look like this" was referring to before I gave up and started reading the comments.

finally

(Anonymous) 2013-01-13 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
finally! this is what I wanted to articulate to troll!anon/op/whomever up above

(Anonymous) 2013-01-12 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
For a lot of people all huskies look like that. I have two huskies right now that don't fit the stereotypic looks and whenever people ask what breed and I explain, there is always doubt.

Can we quit being so polarizing? Liking dogs and liking cats aren't mutually exclusive >___>

I grew up with Labs and thus I can tell features apart from them quite easily. But I have relatives who have a pair of Bearded Collies and I could never tell which one of them was which, unless I saw them together and could see the size difference, since the male was significantly larger than the female. I really don't think this is that strange.

I have a friend who works at a dog day-care center. At one point, she sent a golden retriever home with an owner, who noticed nothing amiss except that the dog was 'unusually well-behaved in the car'. About a half-hour later, she had to call the guy back in because she'd given him the wrong golden retriever. Luckily he was a good sport and thought the whole thing was hilarious.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-14 12:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't really tell the diference from photos, I need to see dogs IRL and huskies are not common at all here. Never seen one. So while I recognise the marking patterns for huskies, the actualy breed (especially a puppy) is much harder to ID

...I thought OP was talking about black dogs.
