Notes:

Sorry, early today!

Also: I'm not going to officially warn for tongue-in-cheek "triggers" just to provide anyone with a fandom-specific in-joke when there are none in the secret.

I thought the point of them is that they essentially are OCs with official character designs? I don't have much interest in them myself, but I've noticed that people seem to take a good deal of fun in thinking up their characterizations and interactions. I don't see how it could be an excuse for OOC when it's said straight up that they're different characters (unlike the darker and grittier fanon reimaginings that long predate them).

Honest query. Why? Because I get that they're OCs, but they also tend to have absolutely nothing to do with Hetalia. As in the nation, history, etc. aspects are never mentioned. I'm not always a fan of OC nations, but they usually at least are... treated as nations.

Basically these are original characters where everything relevant to Hetalia is stripped from them. How are they even APH OCs?

ayrt

I would imagine the why of it, like the why of many things, depends on who you ask. Usually when I see the 2P characters, they're either presented as part of a mirror universe (something that was around before them), someone's dark side(s) personified by magic/tech (also around before them) or darker counterparts to the characters that exist somewhere in the shadows of the prime universe for whatever reason, similar to fanwork which presents the Nyotalia set as counterparts/siblings to the prime characters. I've also seen them used in "what if?" type scenarios; frex, "What if Character X was 2P!Character X but everyone else was the same?" They really aren't anything that didn't exist already, except that they have official designs, so I think a lot of people latched on to them for that reason.

Personally, I don't have particularly strong feelings about the 2P set, even though I do like some of the designs. I have read and enjoyed fics where they're used as mirror universe counterparts (even if seeing the same fanon in every other fic gets old) and where someone's dark side gets magicked/cloned/whatevered into existence, but the 2P characters themselves are secondary to that (pun unintended) aside from giving me something to visualize.

I don't see how they're inherently stripped of any relevance to Hetalia, honestly. I'm curious if we've just had different experiences with them.

Why else do we have high school AUs and A/B/O AUs and firefighter AUs and Any Two Guys porn and flailing over America's (non-existent, probably) abs ad nauseam? Because a good part of the the fandom doesn't seem to really care about the nations or history part, they just want boyfrenz. And Hetalia fandom isn't the only one, it's just very young-skewed and hey, here's their chance for emo OMG HOTT.

I guess to each their own. I've written AUs myself, though they were one-offs and I never tried to take them anywhere because why bother? It would be nice if there was more IC historical stuff, IMO.

While I agree that more IC historical fic would be nice, I don't get the condescension for those who just like to play with the characters. Hetalia isn't a history book (or even historically accurate), and nation-tans are characters just like any others.

I admit people tittering about America's muscles make me want to rub their noses in canon. We've seen him shirtless, WHAT MUSCLES??

So I'm a little bit of a fandom elitist? ;)

But really, if one were to describe Hetalia to someone who was unfamiliar with it, you could start with, "there are all these cute little characters, and a lot of them are boyz." Well, that could describe just about anything. But then you'd say, "and they're nations." Ah, and that is the thing that sets them apart from everything else.

So basically, I was agreeing with the anon I replied to that taking the nation part away from the characters makes them essentially have nothing to do with Hetalia. And thus, for me personally, that makes them uninteresting and pretty much pointless.

But like I said, to each their own, and people will enjoy their emo boyfrenz without my approval, and they are doing it right now and probably posting "I Regret Nothing" chickens all the livelong day.

I can kinda get where you're coming from. What caught my interest was also, "There are all these kooky characters and-- no, wait, there's more-- they're PERSONIFIED NATIONS!"

Once I was actually into the series, though, I admit that I ended as much attached to the characters as to the concept, so I'm in fandom as much for character interactions as I am for historical/cultural trivia. So, Idk, saying that AUs or whatever have nothing to do with Hetalia just throws me off because they're still about those characters and their interactions (well, ostensibly) and it gets annoying to be told I'm not a real fan because I enjoy them (not to say that's what you're saying).

But, ffs, what I wouldn't give for a "Gakuen AU" to actually turn out to be about the Gakuen Hetalia verse, not just a generic high school/boarding school fic.
