I don't often see Southland getting a lot of credit for this (...possibly because a lot of people forget that it's a show), but I think they did a pretty decent job with Cooper. His sexuality just...isn't really made into a big deal in the show (and it definitely could have been an angst-mine, especially since it's a cop show). He's not ashamed of it and even though being gay has given him obstacles to overcome, he straight up says that while his life is fucked up for a lot of reasons, being gay isn't one of them.

Southland does a lot of things right, actually. why don't more people watch Southland :(

I HEART SOUTHLAND. And Ben McKenzie's flawlessness. God, I need to rewatch that.

I didn't realize Southland was a thing until last season! It (and Cooper too) was fantastic and I'm really looking forward to the next season.
