Sorry, early today!

Gay/lesbian characters in media

(Anonymous) 2013-01-12 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
So I've been noticing a lot more gay/lesbian characters in television lately! Sure, a lot of them are stereotypes, token, poorly written, etc. But it's definitely starting to get better, in my opinion. I do wish we got more bisexual and trans* characters, though.

What about you? Feel like the media is getting better or do you view it as still harming the queer community? Any good examples of queer characters that just leaves you with hope for the future of representation in the media?

I don't often see Southland getting a lot of credit for this (...possibly because a lot of people forget that it's a show), but I think they did a pretty decent job with Cooper. His sexuality just...isn't really made into a big deal in the show (and it definitely could have been an angst-mine, especially since it's a cop show). He's not ashamed of it and even though being gay has given him obstacles to overcome, he straight up says that while his life is fucked up for a lot of reasons, being gay isn't one of them.

Southland does a lot of things right, actually. why don't more people watch Southland :(

I HEART SOUTHLAND. And Ben McKenzie's flawlessness. God, I need to rewatch that.

I didn't realize Southland was a thing until last season! It (and Cooper too) was fantastic and I'm really looking forward to the next season.

I'm actually really happy with the way Danny in Teen Wolf is portrayed! It's not any big deal, he's readily accepted, and he even gets to have normal relationships and break-ups. I think it's a good sign. More and more people who've grown up more tolerant are getting into more prominent positions where they can actually get these views out to others, and I think it's starting to change a lot of people's opinions.

Honestly, I use the internet as a gauge for what society at large can take - sort of like a fortune-teller. And given that the internet still seems to have some problems accepting or understanding bisexual and trans* folk (Hourou Musuko fandom, I'm looking at you), I'm not holding my breath on normalized portrayals of them in mass media anytime soon.

I have mixed, but mostly positive, feelings about Max from Happy Endings: he's gay, kind of schlubby, not a stereotype, and in general a pretty well-rounded character. On the other hand, he's kind of a douchebag. Which is in its way pretty progressive, I think, but I do kind of wish they would tone it down a little, because he's sometimes too abrasive to be enjoyable. ABC seems to be trying to kill the show anyway, though.

Also on ABC, Scandal features Cyrus Beene, the morally (dark) grey chief of staff of a Republican president, and his cute journalist hubby James. The show is kind of ridiculously soapy, and I'm sick to death of James's "I want a baaaaaaby" thing (which is a go-to for Shonda, and I guess since she couldn't force it on any of the female characters she had to go with the gay guy), but I like that both James and Cyrus have jobs and do things that are completely unrelated to their homosexuality. In Cyrus's case, they're evil things, but at least that's a start; and in James's case, they're heroic but probably ultimately things that are going to get him killed. Also! Even though Cyrus is kind of older, we've seen them kiss and stuff, not to the point of the steamy sex scenes the main character and her main love interest get, but more than the other married couple.

Hah, I should have refreshed the page before I brought up Happy Endings - I agree with you there.

I haven't seen anything close to every episode of Happy Endings, but from what I've seen I like what they've done with Max. And as obnoxious / created for laughs as the character was, I liked how Woody Harrelson's character in the Friends With Benefits movie went against a number of stereotypes. Wanting some good female gay now :( Oh, but I have been pretty pleased with Anne on Go On.

I like that more and more gay/lesbian characters are just popping up like no big thing. They're not The Gay/Lesbian character anymore, just a character that is also gay/lesbian. Like on White Collar or Teen Wolf (which might not count because it's in some AU where homophobia doesn't exist or something?). But yeah, I like it. I feel like it's a little slow and wish there was more, but it's coming along.

I think it's been getting better for TV shows, but not as much for the big blockbuster movies?

Also there's a thing that keeps popping up where the bad guy acts all camp. Still bugs me that a man acting 'feminine' is considered creepy.

Eh, television is much less conservative than mainstream cinema in general, so that's no surprise. I think with the camp thing you're talking about Skyfall y/y?

Ahaha, that was one of the ones I was thinking of. (However I was pleased that Bond didn't react with disgust, but instead turned it against Silva by being all "Excuse you. Men liking men is normal for me. Try something else, 'cause this isn't working.")
