I have mixed, but mostly positive, feelings about Max from Happy Endings: he's gay, kind of schlubby, not a stereotype, and in general a pretty well-rounded character. On the other hand, he's kind of a douchebag. Which is in its way pretty progressive, I think, but I do kind of wish they would tone it down a little, because he's sometimes too abrasive to be enjoyable. ABC seems to be trying to kill the show anyway, though.

Also on ABC, Scandal features Cyrus Beene, the morally (dark) grey chief of staff of a Republican president, and his cute journalist hubby James. The show is kind of ridiculously soapy, and I'm sick to death of James's "I want a baaaaaaby" thing (which is a go-to for Shonda, and I guess since she couldn't force it on any of the female characters she had to go with the gay guy), but I like that both James and Cyrus have jobs and do things that are completely unrelated to their homosexuality. In Cyrus's case, they're evil things, but at least that's a start; and in James's case, they're heroic but probably ultimately things that are going to get him killed. Also! Even though Cyrus is kind of older, we've seen them kiss and stuff, not to the point of the steamy sex scenes the main character and her main love interest get, but more than the other married couple.

Hah, I should have refreshed the page before I brought up Happy Endings - I agree with you there.
