Notes:

Sorry, early today!

Also: I'm not going to officially warn for tongue-in-cheek "triggers" just to provide anyone with a fandom-specific in-joke when there are none in the secret.

Re: Teaching Men Not to Rape (tw)

Except that the majority of rape cases do not happen in dark alleys or as a result of home break-ins. Putting the focus on self-defense and self-protection means that 1) a great deal of the actual circumstances of rape go ignored and 2) people will use a victim's "failure" to defend herself (or himself) as a way to exonerate the rapist. It's not like that's theoretical: it happens every single day. Why weren't you being more careful with your drink? Why did you take that bus? Why were you out late at night? Why did you get in a car with a man you trusted?--

Oh, right, except we're also not supposed to be so jaded and frigid that we refuse to trust people who could potentially hurt us. How the hell often do rapists go around wearing signs that say "rapist?" Sadly, a friend of mine was raped a few years ago, and it was by a mutual (now-ex, of course) friend. So what's the solution there? Don't make friends?

You will never completely eliminate crime, or lower your risk to nothing. Surely you accept this, yes? There is no perfect solution, and in the modern world you're simply going to have to accept that.

And teaching people to do what they can that exists within their control is always more effective then any other alternative - which is why it's what gets done for every crime. Do you seriously see say 'murderers, have you ever considered putting your knife down and not stabbing that guy?' campaigns being of any value. Why would this change here that makes it special and unique compared to all other crimes? Most rapists know exactly what they're doing is rape, they are fully aware.

And all I can see the feminist sphere doing is their normal damaging histrionics, in an issue they are too emotionally attached too, and ignorant about to actually to any good. The comparison would be our sex crime laws, which follow exactly what is popular among the community - and are empirically awful for it.

Oh.

Effective policing/justice system is not a morality play.

In fact it's one of the most counter-intuitive areas social policy.

What that means is you don't want the people who are personally invested in any given crime giving advice on it. Because it invariable leads to stupid shit like minimum sentencing, watch lists and so on.

Like I said, go to any mainstream, or not so mainstream feminist site and try to discuss the best way to deal with paedophiles. Then look at the vast bodies of information out there on the ideal response. This is the exact same.

Nothing more of value to see here, folks. Shame, I was hoping for something intelligent out of this subthread. It got off to a promising start.

I don't know why I'm replying to this, since you're obviously a troll, but

Do you seriously see say 'murderers, have you ever considered putting your knife down and not stabbing that guy?' campaigns being of any value.

Sure you do. It's campaigns to try to teach "at-risk youth" to try nonviolent conflict resolution.
