I tend to think the same as the others who have said that it may have something to do with how we identify the characters.

On an aside, I do like SPN fics where Castiel takes the Winchester name - Cas doesn't really have a surname of his own in canon (AU fic favours either giving him Novak (his vessel's surname) or Milton (the surname of the fallen angel Anna) - I don't mind Novak too much but Milton never sits quite right to me).

I can never think of Anna's last name without seeing that damn SIGN outside of her house. The one that says The Milton's.

*cough* So yes, I prefer Novak too. Then again, I wish more people would see that name and think of Jimmy, not AU Cas, because there needs to be more Jimmy fic. (And more of him in canon, come to that.)

And I like the first option you mentioned as well. (Always enjoyed the 'Cas becomes a Winchester and a hunter' trope, shame that it actually *happened* this season and wasn't treated seriously.) Also, google "A Wincest Story" if you haven't read it yet.

I remember one fic where Cas was born human and had Novak as his surname, but he also had a twin brother named James (it's not exactly a happy relationship though, Cas is gay and Jimmy (as well as their parents) disapproved. Though that fic Cas happens to also be a fallen angel, reborn human the way Anna was.

The other fic the idea brings to my is another fic where Dean made Cas a fake ID with Novak on it. Cas mentioned that he'd've liked to have Winchester, but Dean points out his FBI record. Later, after said records get erased, Dean is able to get Cas an ID with Winchester on it.

Sounds interesting. On the show, probably the only way the Novak family will ever be re-united is if Cas dies or is permanently stuck in heaven. While I still maintain that Claire needs her father more than Dean needs his buddy, that would still feel sad. I love fics in which Cas and Jimmy both get to exist. (Lots of handwaving you can do in this fandom, even outside of AUs!)

One of my favorites involves Cas having the power to form his own vessel, so he releases Jimmy, but asks him if it's all right to still have the vessel look the same; Jimmy's reply is something like 'Fine, but you take the damn coat.'

I'm not as up on SN fic these days, didn't realize this BB was coming due, so thanks!

Yeah, I've seen fics where Cas asked a favour from Gabriel for a seperate body. My current favourite fic however is one where, after being free of vessel-hood for two years Jimmy finds the Winchesters on his doorstep... along with his twin brother. It was a Stonehenge Apocalypse crossover where Jacob survived by agreeing to be Cas's vessel.

I like SA crosses, in fact the fic on the Novak BB I want to read is one. I think I just like the idea of one: two Mishas, and two: the implied issues between a devout man like Jimmy and a likely atheist like Jacob.

...And yes, I love Jimmy. I am still keeping an eye on the current Novak Big Bang - summaries got posted in the last few days and there's a couple I'd like to read once they're done.
