lol yeah, that's right, you do sound pretentious.

How is it 'cheating', though, that doesn't even make any sense.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-15 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
Not OP

Not cheating, I guess, but I honestly feel that if you can't come up with ideas that satisfy you enough on your own then that's really sad. I get getting drunk for the writing bit since that can be very intimidating, but you're so inhibited that you can't think out of the box without aid? Sad.

*I genuinely don't give a shit how many popular artists have said they get inspiration only under some substance. They're not untouchable.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-15 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
You're still yourself when you're drunk/high. Anyway, that's not my issue with this - nowhere in the secret did it say that these people op looks down on do all their creating when they're in an altered state of mind. Some of us are perfectly happy writing drunk and sober, it doesn't have to be one or the other.

I also think it's judgemental to call those who do only write under the influence 'sad'.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-15 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
da

Making judgments is sort of what people do. I don't think it's always a negative thing.

"You're still yourself when you're drunk/high."

Like fuck you are.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-16 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Um, yes, you are. Even the horrible stuff that comes out was there all along, just buried deep. Alcohol and drugs don't create anything that wasn't there to begin with.

They didn't call the person sad, they said if the person could only be creative at all while under the influence then that was [a] sad [fact]. I'd have to agree with that; given a choice, I think most people would prefer to be able to think outside the box whenever they felt like it.

you can't think out of the box without aid? Sad.

Way to bash people who don't have the kind of "natural" creativity you wish they did, or maybe that you have. Some of them probably already feel pretty bad about that.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-15 08:26 am (UTC)(link)
Way to be overdefensive. Sad =/= bad.

uh, pretty sure in this case yes, sad = bad

Have you actually ever BEEN drunk or high? Because you're still you. It's still your own thoughts, your own creativity, your own capacity to think outside the box. You just don't inhibit yourself with self-doubt. You go for all the little things you didn't properly acknowledge before.

It's not "cheating". If anything, it's opening your mind to yourself in ways you can't necessarily do while drunk. You're not stealing the ideas from anyone, you're making them yourself.

A fucking men. Jesus.

I suspect this person has not.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-15 06:45 am (UTC)(link)
This. I never drink to get drunk off my ass just enough to relax, and it's nice while writing. It actually helps me focus on one task or scene because it slows my thoughts down a bit. Also amen to losing some self-doubt and just letting the writing ideas flow.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-15 06:32 am (UTC)(link)
Drugs and/or alcohol do not solicit the Idea Fairy to pluck ideas from the nowhere and drop them in your brain. Any ideas you get after having a couple drinks or smoking something illegal are still 100% your ideas. It's not a matter of being intimidated, either. But for me, it's easier to relax from life/work and concentrate on writing if I've had a couple drinks.

Neither you nor anyone else gets to take away the credit for my writing/drawing and say it's invalid because I had a couple drinks.

I think the key here is the OP is anxious about their own creative output or something else in their life, so they think means of dealing with that anxiousness is a form of cheating.

Basically "I have to deal with this crap, if you don't you have an unfair leg up."

That's... sad wow

[personal profile] diet_poison 2013-01-15 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
That would make more sense if creating things were really a giant competition between everybody, not something that (ideally) many people would do and we'd all support each other etc.

Your vision is how it often is, but I think a lot of people would disagree with you. They're looking at it as another opportunity to be judged. So they judge defensively.

That is sad =(

(Anonymous) 2013-01-15 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
Except that drinking isn't really dealing with the anxiety. Actually working through the sources of anxiety, or experiencing the anxiety and creating despite it, would be dealing with it.

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2013-01-15 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
It is dealing with it in the sense that it can be therapeutic, it makes anxiety go away even for a short time which is amazing for people who can't afford/don't have access to meds that do that (which are usually more dangerous and potentially more habit-forming anyway)

Also for some people (UH ME) drinking heavily sometimes makes depression magically disappear for a time -- I don't know what this happens, sometimes the next day it's just like BAM, gone, for months sometimes, who knows why this happens. I'm sure there's some chemical reason but whatever

You're a fucking douchebag. Not everyone CAN deal with anxiety in the same way as maybe you can.

yo idk about you but having a drink or 6 in me before i try to talk to people is my primary method of "actually working through" it

I get why drinking is an appealing way to deal with problems for some people, but I can't do it. The couple times I tried, my anxiety came back the instant the buzz wore off, and then I had to deal with the problems while nursing a hangover.
