Re: I HATE IT WHEN PEOPLE CUT LOOSE

Not really. There's nothing wrong with not drinking at all.

The problem is when you turn Not Drinking into the dominant feature of your social life to the point where you refuse to hang out anywhere people may be drinking. To the point where you judge people for having one beer. Please keep in mind that neither me nor my friend get very drunk.

Hell, I'd named myself The Designated Sober Person and let everyone know so. I wasn't even going to drink! But they still wouldn't bother coming.

Basically, not drinking is fine. Turning yourself into the angst-ridden second coming of Carrie A. Nation with glares instead of hatchets is kind of lame.

Wildly unrelated to anything about this conversation, but I thought your icon was Wesley Crusher the first three times I saw it, and my shame needed to be shared with the internet.

On the flip-side, coming from a teetotaller:

The problem is when you turn Drinking into the dominant feature of your social life to the point where you refuse to hang out anywhere people might not be drinking. To the point where you judge people for not having one beer.

Also, as someone else pointed out, since it wasn't just the two teetotallers who didn't show up, I highly doubt alcohol had anything to do with the attendance issue. But thanks for assigning the scapegoats.

Well yeah. Being an alcoholic is awful.

For the record, I went to college with the teetotalers and know how they behave. I'd seen them turn down social occasions before because someone had mentioned bringing beer.

But thanks for questioning my anecdote about people I know and you don't without basis! Why are the shitty people always anon?

That was calling you out on your unjustified and very clear assumptions, bb. As for "I've been to college and I know how teetotallers act" - your experience =/= reality. Yours is the shitty attitude here.

That sounds kind of overdefensive but not really shitty. *shrug* Your earlier statements on this topic were kinda rude so I can see why someone would react that way, anyway. If I were one of those "people who never drinks ever" I would have been pretty offended.

Because they hate being called out for being shitty, god forbid they use an actual identifier so people know how shitty they are

Again, pretty sure that has more to do with them being party-poopers and less with them being teetotalers.

Maybe some sober people just don't enjoy hanging around a group of drunk people?

Re: I HATE IT WHEN PEOPLE CUT LOOSE

(Anonymous) 2013-01-15 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
This. Someone brings beer. Other people also brings beer. They play drinking games. Three hours later, half the group will be completely smashed and crying or vomiting or pissing everywhere.

Unless I know for sure I can leave before before things get to that stage or I know the people going to the party are responsible drinkers, I'm not going to be there.

Re: I HATE IT WHEN PEOPLE CUT LOOSE

I lived in a residence hall all through college (and worked as a resident for a year and a half), and my university was pretty well-known as a big drinking school. After graduating, I never wanted to be around groups of drunk people again. At my age most people know their limits by now and usually don't get sloshed, but it's still really uncomfortable for me to be around drunk people.

Also, I've known a couple people over the years who grew up with alcoholic parents and now alcohol is a major trigger for them, so they avoid gatherings where there might be drinking for that reason.

I don't doubt that there are people who are self-righteous about their not-drinking, but there are plenty of us who have our reasons for not wanting to be around people who've been drinking, and since we don't really want to be party poopers and make everyone else stop having fun for our sakes, it's just easier if we avoid events where we think drinking is going to happen.

It's interesting to me how polarizing this issue is. =( I wish people would just live and let live.

(that's directed at this thread, not you...this is actually a really good comment)

THIS.

Re: I HATE IT WHEN PEOPLE CUT LOOSE

(Anonymous) 2013-01-15 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Very much this. There are a few alcoholics in my family, one of whom absolutely terrified me once. I don't drink and I don't like going to parties and strange places where there will be drinking, but that's not because I'm judging anyone, it's because I really don't want to end up in that place again.

That still doesn't explain how it's supposedly their fault no one else turned up.

ok, fair enough.

Re: I HATE IT WHEN PEOPLE CUT LOOSE

(Anonymous) 2013-01-15 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
This so fucking hard. I've never seen people give someone a hard time for just saying they didn't want a drink. There are several people in my group of friends who don't drink and no one gives a shit, we all know they don't so we don't ask them if they want a beer or anything. The only times I've ever seen anyone get grief for it is when they acted it a totally sanctimonious way, like "eww why would you even ask me that."

Re: I HATE IT WHEN PEOPLE CUT LOOSE

(Anonymous) 2013-01-15 08:24 am (UTC)(link)
Then you're lucky. I don't drink and people often give me a hard time for just saying that I don't drink. (I don't drink because I don't like the taste. I would have to force myself to drink). I often hear: "Come on, just try this, this is totally tasty!" "Don't be a poor sport!" etc.
Or they look at me like I was an alien and try (really hard) to persuade me to drink.
And no, I don't bother anyone who wants to drink.

Re: I HATE IT WHEN PEOPLE CUT LOOSE

(Anonymous) 2013-01-15 08:56 am (UTC)(link)
THIS SO MUCH!!! I often drink a bit (a glass) even if I hate the taste just to have my peace. Never once in my life when I said "I don't drink because I don't like the taste" (and I say it normally without condemning tone) someone wasn't trying to get me to drink.

Also don't like the taste

(Anonymous) 2013-01-15 10:44 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, yes, yes!
Typical conversation I get EVERY time:

Person: "What - you don't drink?!?"
Me: "Yeah, I just don't like the taste."
Person: "You totally have to try this ...(insert alcoholic drink)! This one tastes very good!"
Me: "Ah, no thank you. If I can taste the alcohol then I don't like it."
Person: "Then you have to try this cocktail - it's totally sweet and you don't taste the alcohol."
Me: "Yes, I tried one of these cocktails - I can still taste the alcohol and I don't like these sickly-sweet drinks."
Person: "I'm sure there is some alcoholic drink you would like, you just have to try everything."
Me: "If you mean so."

Is it so hard to understand that there are indeed people who just don't like the flavour of alcohol? Apparently. You can drink as much as you like but please stop trying to convince me. If there is something you don't like (drink or food) I will also leave you in peace and don't nag you about it.
(Sorry, but I'm really frustrated because I got this reaction really every time! Just one time I wish for a "Ah, that's okay." :( )

OT: I don't drink, and my grandmother gave me an antique Carry A. Nation pin. I loves it! But I'd still go your party. :)
