I do think that the Old Who fans who snivel and whine and splutter with rage whenever the new series is slightly different from the old one are far, far, far more annoying than the stupid new fans who can't wrap their mind around things like loving lots of companions and lots of equally-valid regenerations and stuff. And that's saying something.

I just want to wrap all the Who up in a protective and loving (or at least tolerantly fond) embrace and shield it forever from everyone who thinks "not my favorite era/Doctor/companion/etc" = "unmitigated crap that only terrible people with no taste enjoy." Classic vs. new, RTD vs. Moffat, all the perennial companion wank, people frowning on various Doctors, the whole blessed conga line of judgemental sneering. I know it's not going away and that it's a time-honored fandom tradition dating back to the mid-1960s, but... protective and loving embrace, dammit, is that too much to ask.

Oh yes, A+ to all of this. Doesn't stop me from raging a bit when stupid things happen and being disappointed at obvious instances of wasted potential, but honestly, it's all more good than bad IMO.

*spit-take*

Now, to bring this to its logical conclusion, we obviously need to find someone who maintains that Verity Lambert took a good idea and ran it into the ground, thereby ruining the show forever.

Oh yes :D Not to mention "the sudden introduction of a time-traveling alien totally ruined that perfectly good show about a police officer walking through a foggy junkyard at night!"

I'm with you, Ten.

(Given that Seven is My Doctor, and the only one more loathed than him is Six...)

Really? I got the impression that Seven was pretty popular, especially in more recent years. His stories get a lot of criticism because many of them sorta sucked, but that always seemed to be a separate matter.

Probably depends on what part of the fandom you look at, I guess, like most everything else.

But in the parts of the fandom I tend to bounce around in, Seven is hated. (Why, then, do I associate with this branch of fandom? Discussion of the new series is generally good - though I was the only one defending Smith before he took over, now everybody loves him. It's eyerolling, even if I'm vindicated. :p)

Generally, since his was the last era of the series it gets blamed for killing it, and some people can't really separate that from the character himself (to be fair, that probably applies to me, as well, since I generally have fairly rosy memories of the series at the time, though mostly based on the fact that I liked the Doctor, and Ace...and maybe based on the fact I was, like, 10 when he started*), and 'the stories were not well written' becomes 'Seven sucks'. (Interestingly enough, that doesn't seem to apply to Ace...whenever she's remembered in discussions of the Companions, she's generally pretty well liked.)

And, yeah, I've seen some rehabilitation of Seven's rep, lately...still he gets more hate than anyone but Six, IME...it's just that he's getting less than he used to. (Consensus on Six also seems to be improving, from what I've seen.)

* The first episode of Doctor Who I went out of my way to watch was his first episode - before that I'd stop and watch an episode if I came across it and it looked interesting - I caught a lot of Three this way, and enough episodes of Four (all bad!) to form a bias against him - but didn't LOOK for it. So, yeah, Seven wasn't my first Doctor, but he sure as heck is My Doctor.

You know, it just depressingly occurred to me that Eleven's probably gonna be the new Seven if the show runs long enough. You'll have the fans who were there at the time going on about how much they loved him, and new people who haven't bothered to watch the stuff that's now considered old going "wait, the guy from River Song mess? He's good?"

Well, Three is my Doctor, and no-one much frowns on him. But I also nurse a love of Six, so oh, so much this!

Nooooo, how do you loathe Seven? He's one of my favorites!

Okay granted, most of my experience with Seven is from s25 and s26, which despite their wonky script editing are among the finest seasons in the history of Doctor Who, but seriously, the earlier stuff could consist of nothing but him tripping over banana peels and Seven would still be awesome.

The earlier stuff WAS kind of mostly Seven tripping over banana peels...figuratively. But IDGAF because that characterization phase was used in the audio drama Bang-Bang-a-Boom AND IT WAS GLORIOUS.
