This secret is awesome and so are you, OP :) Honestly, I'm sick to death of every cast having to have "conflict" about everything.

Well, obviously not zero conflict ever -- that'd be totally boring. I mean the whole "nope, people aren't allowed to agree on things or get along for more than five minutes" mentality.

God, I wish Star Trek TNG would come back :c

I would happily take any of the shows set in that century.

Reverse the polarity of the shield array!

Shoot it with a tachyon beam!

Heeeeeeeee. Those two things together can solve any problem in the Trek 'verse. :)

I agree with you, OP, about enjoying shows where the cast is not largely in conflict with each other but with outside forces. And I love that in Trek, the characters are essentially kind to each other. There's not a lot of backstabbing going on.

This is one of the reasons I adored Friends and am now enjoying New Girl and Raising Hope. The shows are not bereft of conflict and everyone doesn't always get along perfectly, but the characters are genuinely friends with each other and are kind to each other. It's really, really refreshing to watch that kind of show.

Bounce a graviton particle beam off the main deflector dish
Thats the way we do things, lad, we're making shit up as we wish
The Klingons and the Romulans pose no threat to us
'Cause if we find we're in a bind we just make some shit up

As much as I love DS9 and ~~~DRAMA~~~, I definitely agree with you. I absolutely miss TNG, and its silliness and its lack of continuing plotlines and most of all its overall positivity, the overall bonhomie and camaraderie and the general atmosphere of optimism - even if it was at times unrealistic, it was nice.

I really wish they could bring back episodic Trek with that kind of atmosphere.

(also it's interesting that, in the case of DS9 and TNG, the cast dynamics mirrored the difference in the on-screen tone. funny old world)

Were things more strained on the DS9 cast? Deets?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-16 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
I don't remember all the details, and this is mostly unsourced gossip so obviously take it with a grain of salt but IIRC there was a lot of people who were focused on being serious ~~~actors~~~ and a decent amount of interpersonal drama. Not necessarily infighting, but definitely a lot colder than the TNG crew, and a lot more cliques. I believe I've read that Avery Brooks, for example, just was not interested in getting along with the rest of the cast to the point of being kind of a dick about it, and that Colm Meany was close to Alexander Siddig but distant from other people. I also kind of vaguely recall hearing some rumors about cast romances that lead to awkwardness (besides Visitor and Siddig). But it's been a while.

In general, though, it was apparently a lot colder and less friendly than the famously friendly TNG cast.

I like this secret.

[personal profile] thren 2013-01-16 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. TNG just came to Netflix in Canada, so we've been having a rewatch. It's an awesome show even in its cheesiness. We've been noticing some TNG Fatigue, though, when after a few episodes you just go 'yes, I know. You're all awesome, and Riker has to cart his balls around in a wheelbarrow because he's so fucking manly.'

(Anonymous) 2013-01-16 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
Also, Wesley is an amazing god child, everytime Troi gets a new boyfriend, bad shit happens, and I have no idea why they keep using the holodeck when something ALWAYS goes wrong and almost gets everyone killed. (I might be in Canada and taking advantage of Netflix for a re-watch, too. Lol.)

(Anonymous) 2013-01-16 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
Sympathies. I'm not huge on TNG, but this IS how I feel about early SG1. :P

I loved SG1 all through it's run, don't get me wrong, but in the beginning when it was more "We go through the gate, we get into trouble, we get out of trouble, we go home" with some flavorful bickering but fundamental camaraderie was the best. They were still a good team throughout the run, but life just kicked the shit out of them so much that the basic joy was gone.

I'm actually a hardcore K/Ser and TOS fangirl, along with major DS9 love..... but I would do almost ANYTHING to have a Trek show on TV again.

So basically, I agree with you OP!

(Anonymous) 2013-01-16 05:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Not on TV but have you heard about the Renegades project? Their kickstarter was recently funded and it's nice to see so many of the old Voyager crew participating.

I'd be happy with more of ANY star trek series (except maybe Enterprise).

I really miss the weekly eps, the exploration, meeting new species, messages about morality/hope/humanity etc, the cracky eps (like the Robin Hood/Sherlock Holmes TNG and the Arachnia Queen of the Spider people VOY eps) and the characters too. I loved the characters.

I miss star trek. :(

The Proton adventures in Voyager are awesome. The way Janeway gets into it playing Arachnia...ugh my Janeway feels are returning send help.

My dad's a huge trekkie and TNG is his favorite. I grew up watching it with him, and it ended up being my favorite Star Trek incarnation too. The series is up on Netflix (at least in the US and Canada, I don't know about other countries), so I've been rewatching bits of it lately. For all its faults and all the technobabble, I love TNG to pieces, and for all the weird shit that happened in the show, I'd give just about anything to be a member of Picard's crew.

This is the show that made me a Trek fan and it's still my all time favorite show. I miss it so hard. I still think it's flawless.

TNG is my happy place show. The spot where nothing can hurt me and everything is beautiful, optimistic, softly lit and cheerful. I just adore it. Yes, it's repetitive and has it's faults, but emotionally, it's the centre of my television experience. It's the safe place where science is cracktastic and everyone goes to concerts in their free time.
