SPOILERS-S P O I L E R S

Yep, spoilers. If you read past this point it's your own damn fault. Kay? Kay!

Again, don't read this if you don't want to be spoiled. Yep.

I'm sort of on the fence with this show at the moment. I'm really hating Hook. Him shooting Belle to send her over the line really annoyed me. As if Rumple needed anymore angst. Apparently there's a theory going around that Snow's mother was Korra's sister as well. Which...just sort of makes the whole thing even more complicated.

...but why does that make you hate Hook? He's a bad guy, who hates the Crocodile/Rumple for killing the woman he loved. Him KILLING Belle would have made sense for his character.

Unless of course you hated Hook from the get-go, in which case, please carry on.

Because he didn't shoot her to kill her, just to have her forget Rumple. It's pretty much an angsty plot that will resolve itself with a "True Love Returned My Memories" episode. IDK, I just think the story was already so full of angst, it's kind of grating at this point.

Ah, okay, that makes more sense. More of a "damn it writers" moment than a "hook, how dare you!"

I actually liked Hook just for that, ngl. I can't stand Rumbelle. At all. Especially since she did not seem to care that he killed his wife. She could have at least confronted him about it. The writers try to play it up at some sappy, epic ~twu wuv~ while glazing over how incredibly unhealthy it is. YMMV of course.

The Cora theory is interesting, but I don't think they were sisters, otherwise Regina and Snow definitely would have met before the Stable Boy episode. I do think they had some kind of connection, but idk what.

Seeing as he's killed whole towns of people back in the day, I don't see why adding one more body to the pile would sway her. I mean sure, a throw away line of "You want revenge on him cause he murdered your loved one? You should take a ticket, get in line and be prepared to read a book."

Personally I hate the whole "mass murdering off screen bad guy kicks a kitten on-screen suddenly OMG MORAL EVENT HORIZON, I shall now shun you for the 10 minutes it takes to realize nothing has actually changed!"

The thing is, Milah wasn’t just “one more body.” She was his WIFE. Since she’s currently in a romantic relationship with him, I would imagine she would be a bit uncomfortable with the fact that he killed someone he pledged to love for the rest of his life, as opposed to random strangers he has no attachment to. I mean, I know I sure as hell would want out if I discovered that my boyfriend killed his ex, regardless of how much I believed ~“there is good in him!”~ And when she asked him what happened to Milah before she found out, he twisted the truth, like always. Ugh. How can she possibly delude herself into thinking he’s ~changed~ when there’s absolutely nothing to indicate that he has?

/rant over

I completely agree with your second point though.

To be fair, I get the feeling that marrying for love isn't the norm in FTL, despite the show's focus on TRUE LOVE as some kind of panacea. I've a sneaking suspicion that Milah married Rumpelstiltskin because she was already pregnant with someone else's kid, and even if that's not where the writers are going with it, I doubt the characters were ever supposed to be in love. Probably Rumpelstiltskin paid a couple of sheep to her parents in exchange for someone to keep house for him and pop out babies. Marriage for love is kind of a historical anomaly, and as ahistorical as the show is, I think the emphasis on "true love" as this rare and precious thing probably means that most people don't have it. So Rumpelstiltskin murdering Milah isn't quite the same thing as his murdering Belle would be. Not to say that that excuses his actions; murdering anyone is emphatically not okay, and people who say that she deserved to die make me sick. I'm a fan of Rumpelstiltskin, but like all the show's villains, he's got so much forgiveness to earn and so many amends to make and so many habits to change that redemption is going to be a long hard slog, if he manages it at all. As to nothing indicating that he's changed, of course there is. Not necessarily in a healthy way, because his moral compass is almost completely external and just had her memory wiped, but it's still possible that he'll continue not killing people even without someone else to tell him it's wrong. It's still a change from nothing being able to stop him.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I don't think they were ever in love either. But regardless of how they personally felt about each other, they took vows and they had a sexual history. Even if he didn't love her "as much" (or at all), I would still imagine Belle would feel uncomfortable, at the very least.

No, I really don't believe he has changed. How I see it, change has to come from the heart, and the only incentive for him to do so is so Belle would not leave him (although she always ends up running back...). There are no signs that he regrets what he's done, and like you said, the reasons for his tempered maliciousness is external. I suppose you can say his BEHAVIOR has changed, but I do not believe Rumple himself has actually changed one bit. He still twisted the truth when talking to Belle in the last episode, turned Smee into a rat, and was about to (albeit understandably) barbecue Hook. I love him as a villain, but if they want to sell his redemption arc I want him to actually realize all the shit he's done instead of being transformed by "the love of a good woman" cliche.

I can't stand Rumbelle. At all.

I am so glad I'm not alone in this. I don't hate them, but I can't get past the age difference. It creeps the hell out of me.

You're definitely not alone, though it seems those that don't like the pairing are definitely in the minority, if fandom is anything to go by. I just really hate seeing their relationship romanticized, or made out to be this kind of pure, ideal love by both the show and the fans. The age difference itself itself is not the main reason I dislike the pairing, though it definitely squicks me a bit. I'm not sure how old the characters in the show are supposed to be, but I always got the impression that he was old enough to be her father.

Re: SPOILERS-S P O I L E R S

(Anonymous) 2013-01-16 05:14 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, the only people on the show anywhere close to Rumpelstiltskin's age are probably fairies and maybe some other mythological creatures. He was green and scaly for at least three centuries between losing his son and the curse being cast. But then, Hook is only a few years younger, unless maybe he's much older because he spent an un-aging childhood as a Lost Boy in Neverland. And plenty of people ship Hook with characters much younger than he is. Graham was old enough to be Emma's father. The Blue Fairy is the oldest character the show has introduced; if an episode airs in which she has a romantic past, does it have to be with another immortal to not be gross? Jiminy is older than Gepetto, but looks young enough to be his son, and plenty of people ship him with Ruby. And if you're just talking about how old the actors are, I'm betting there're plenty of people on this comm who are or have been in relationships with similar age gaps, or who know people who are, since they're something like twenty years apart.

Re: SPOILERS-S P O I L E R S

(Anonymous) 2013-01-16 07:29 am (UTC)(link)
It should be fairly evident when discussing character ages and possible squick factor that we are talking about how the characters look at the present time. That's the whole reason why some would find it uncomfortable to watch, no? Due to the wibbly wobbly timey wimey nature of the show, all the characters are technically older than they appear. No one would possibly accuse, I dunno, Grace, of being a pedophile if she kissed Henry, even though she is technically 38 years older than him.

And I may be off base here, but I get the distinct impression you are trying to make it seem like I look down on people who are involved/know people who are involved in relationships with large age gaps, which is not only inaccurate but also inappropriate and off-topic. We are not discussing real life relationships; we are talking about fictional characters portrayed by real actors. Belle and Rumple are a lot different than Emilie and Robert. With Belle and Rumple, there are power dynamics that, imo, really emphasize the age gap between them. I do not get the feeling that it is a relationship of equals. At all. It is entirely possible that someone might have difficulty swallowing their scenes due to a combination of the actor’s appearances combined with the corny dialogue.
