What's your favourite kind of fic?

I fucking love space opera AUs. Can't get enough of them.

Character studies. I know that's basicmode for most people but it's the main thing I'm here for.

Selkie AUs

failing that, mermaid AUs

I also have a weakness for amnesia fic (I KNOW IT'S BAD, I CAN'T HELP IT)

Slow burning romances. Preferably slow burning romances starring an antagonistic pair. Like, some enemies to frenemies to friends to lovers stuff. What can I say? I love sexual tension.

LOOOONG Plotty case fics where everyone does their job awesomely with no (or at least minimal) interpersonal conflicts between canon characters or over the top angst. (basically what you'd get in an a good episode of a police procedural).

Character studies, character-povs on certain themes, other characters, ideas, or events; vignettes, drabbles, missing scenes and fics set in the gaps between canonical scenes, episode tags, the rare times first- or second-person monologues are actually done right.

I like whump. But only if it has a happy ending. You can destroy a character mentally and physically as much as you want. As long as he is gets better by the end.

Hurt/comfort&angst when not OOC. That comes best with complicated case fic or slight crack.

Also combination of humour and fluffy (relatively) relationship makes me utterly and ridiculously happy.

Hm... mysteries where nobody trusts each other, I guess? My vocabulary is failing me at the moment.
As in: bitter noir detectives, investigative journalists, spies, law enforcement, AU or not, I don't care. Give me all of them.

I like human AUs for supernatural fandoms and supernatural AUs for other fandoms

I like fics that explore dark themes and secrets that become known. But most importantly, the dialogue needs to be good. I can handle fair-to-middling narrative, but unrealistic dialogue (usually associated with unrealistic characterization or unreasonable levels of emotional clarity) is an immediate back-button thing.

One-shots that focus on a particular character/relationship/event and go into great detail with them.

If it has more than like, 8 chapters, I don't really feel like reading it.

Pretend-dating-for-a-cause-but-secretly-pining-on-both-sides. Seriously, I drop everything when I come across one of these, and when I find ones that are 20K-30K in length, I'm in heaven. :)

Time travel, Peggy Sues (a character returns to their younger self and now has foreknowledge to act differently), Groundhog Day loops, "For want of a nail" style AUs/single point of divergence AUs (one thing happens differently than it did in canon, causing a snowball reaction of events).

Bonus points if instead of being a "Fix Fic" things turn out worse, but there is also something to be said for the feel good effect of terrible events in canon being averted. c:

Oooh, i do, too, but only if the science part is at least marginally smart. As much as i love 'Firefly', for instance, i cringe at that ship full of things that FLY AROUND and BREAK and SMASH INTO PEOPLE!

But yes - anyone In Spaaaaaaaaaace! and i'm hooked. Also, ridiculously smutty D/s stuff where the 's' is a teen and the D is a bit reluctant. And no silly 'master/mistress' business or 'aftercare' or collars. Just - control.

Hurt/Comfort. Or angst with happy endings. I like fluff too, but it doesn't work with all characters and it's easier to see them OOC in them.

Stuff that reads so much like the canon that it might as well be a side story or a new episode or a sequel or the like. If I like the canon, what I'm looking for in fic is "more of that".

Which means that usually what I like is semi-lengthy, probably chaptered action/adventure fic with lots of character interaction but where any romance is a side plot at most, given my fandoms.

Long, world-buildy, angsty, slow burning romance where the characters frequently misunderstand each other and everyone is terribly sad until right before the end they're happy. LOL

+1 to your space opera AUs. Also, Superhero AUs.

As others have said, I love slow burn romances. I love seeing the relationship grow and gradually change; it makes the story all the more convincing and satisfying when they get together.

Apocalypse AUs are a big thing for me.

But I basically love anything well-written that focuses on female characters. Even better when it's multiple female characters, really minor female characters, is incredibly long or involves femslash.

I also love fic that focuses on exploring the canon from a minor character's POV.

Ooh...and I love AUs where my favorite characters who died in canon, do NOT die.

I like adventure stories or sweet, happy, fluffy kinds of stories. Doesn't matter what kind of happy fluff, as long as it's a fun read.

Post-apocalyptic AUs, Stephen King's "The Stand" small band of survivors sort of thing. Throw in some zombies or Evil Incarnate and it's even better.

I'll take a vampire AU in a pinch, so long as they're serious-vamps and not sparkle-pires (even Rice-style angst-pires will do if they actually kill people.)
