Work problems

(Anonymous) 2013-01-16 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
So I'm a preschool teacher at a private school so we have a primary school in the same compound. There's this kid who registered late to primary because his mother 'forgot he was of age' (yeah idk that's what she said). So the head teacher of preschool said to let him into preschool to let him get used to the school environment, and in the mean time, she'd teach him how to read.

On the second day he came to school screaming that he was scared and didn't want to learn from her because she would get angry at him. He sounded so terrified, and I know our head teacher has a ... history of being a little harsh with words, but everyone else says he'll be fine and he's kicking up a fuss because he doesn't want to learn. I'm not so sure though. I won't go into detail, but I know what it's like to be scared shitless of someone and he reminded me awfully of some of my own experiences. Idk, nobody seems to think it's anything and I might be making a mountain out of a molehill, but I'm worried.

Okay, share work problems here.

Ouch. I really don't have any insight about kids so I'll have to stick to sharing my own very boring work problem, sorry OP!anon.

I recently started a short-term job. It pays acceptably well, it's very convenient to my home, and I love the work and the people, but it has a set end date (with zero possibility of extension) and no benefits. Meanwhile I have a few different temp/staffing agencies trying to hump my resume. I just had another agency interview today. I'm used to agencies being fucking useless so I probably shouldn't be worrying just yet, but I'm genuinely not sure how I'll handle things if one of them finds me a job that'll do more for me than the one I'm doing right now. I really like my new job but it is such a dead end. I can't let them guilt me into staying when they are offering me NOTHING beyond hourly pay for a few months, but I am worried about the possibility of bailing and then ending up stuck doing something much less interesting/with much worse people. :/

is it possible for you to volunteer to teach him a little?

If I were you, I wouldn't ignore it. I mean, a false negative is going to be more trouble than a false positive. What's your school's policy for if you have a concern about how one of the other teachers is treating a student?

I definitely think you should at least look into it and do something if appropriate, and agree with what was said above about a false negative vs. a false positive. It wasn't the same thing, but I dealt with a lot of stuff that no one should have to deal with when I was a kid, and on the few occasions I was able to reach out for help, nobody really cared enough to help. You might have the chance to be the person that this kid needs right now, and if nothing's going on, then hey, at least you know you're a good enough person to try and you'll learn a bit about how to deal with it when something does come up. Because, unfortunately, if you work with kids, it will come up eventually.

Ouch. Poor kid. Regarding harshness with words, my first thoughts were of a dance teacher my cousin spoke of - she was incredibly rude to students, especially beginners, and would tear into them for not being able to do things they'd only learned the lesson prior. I should not assume that's what's going on here, though, and I hope it'll be alright in the end.

For my own work problems...
Because our planner has not been doing his job, I've pulled crazy extra hours at work, sunday-tuesday, with between 10,5 - 12,5 hours. 1600+ knitted hats need to be embroidered by wednesday (tomorrow). I was promoted from embroidery to a desk job almost a year ago; I'm not exactly allowed to work in production anymore, nor are my feet used to me standing all day. Oh bother...

My gut says it wasn't that your coworker was too harsh, but that he's accustomed to a horrific response if he doesn't "measure up". This kind of reaction and the mother who "forgot" her boy needs to attend school aren't solid proof of something wrong at home, but they definitely make me concerned for this kid.

"the mother who "forgot" her boy needs to attend school

Yeah, that jumped out at me as well. I second your concern that there may be more problems at home than at school.

I think it's good to be concerned. I'll admit I'm not an expert on kids, but I think feeling terrified of school, and then not having anyone try to help, could make the kid feel pretty helpless and miserable. There may not be a perfect solution, but I think it's better to do something than nothing. I don't know if your coworker is to blame or not (like another anon mentioned, it's possible the boy has some issues at home or isn't being encouraged much by his family), but I think it's good you care about his well-being.

My work problem: my small retail job does not have a ton of hours. It's normal to only work two or three days a week, max. I'm cool with that, but I do rely on having more or less consistent hours. Recently, I got a new coworker. She's great to work with, but she wants as many hours as she can get and is very assertive/aggressive about getting them. A few times now, I've lost hours because she's talked to the boss and threatened to quit if she didn't get more. At first it wasn't a problem because the distribution of hours was still fair, but over the last few weeks scheduling has been overwhelmingly tilted in her favor.

You need to learn to be assertive yourself and talk to your boss about the hour distribution. Do not talk to your co-worker. It won't help. Considering the economy and stuff, she probably has a solid reason for needing as many hours as she can get from a job, so I don't think you would be able to convince her otherwise. Besides, the boss should be in charge of this, so that is the go to person.

My gut reaction is that there are seeerious problems at home. It's quite possible that the teacher is being too rough with him, but the mom's "derp I forgot his age" explanation, together with his screaming terror, is a big red flag. I would be very worried. Is there some way you can look into his home life and see if he is okay? D:
