I think it's good to be concerned. I'll admit I'm not an expert on kids, but I think feeling terrified of school, and then not having anyone try to help, could make the kid feel pretty helpless and miserable. There may not be a perfect solution, but I think it's better to do something than nothing. I don't know if your coworker is to blame or not (like another anon mentioned, it's possible the boy has some issues at home or isn't being encouraged much by his family), but I think it's good you care about his well-being.

My work problem: my small retail job does not have a ton of hours. It's normal to only work two or three days a week, max. I'm cool with that, but I do rely on having more or less consistent hours. Recently, I got a new coworker. She's great to work with, but she wants as many hours as she can get and is very assertive/aggressive about getting them. A few times now, I've lost hours because she's talked to the boss and threatened to quit if she didn't get more. At first it wasn't a problem because the distribution of hours was still fair, but over the last few weeks scheduling has been overwhelmingly tilted in her favor.

You need to learn to be assertive yourself and talk to your boss about the hour distribution. Do not talk to your co-worker. It won't help. Considering the economy and stuff, she probably has a solid reason for needing as many hours as she can get from a job, so I don't think you would be able to convince her otherwise. Besides, the boss should be in charge of this, so that is the go to person.
