I gained fifteen pounds over winter break.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-17 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
...But I can't really tell?

I went from 115 lbs to 130 lbs, but I can't tell the difference. IDK. I feel like gaining that much weight quickly is unhealthy, though. Should I try to lose it?

Do your clothes still fit? If yes, don't stress over it. Just go back to your regular eating habits. 130 isn't an unhealthy weight, unless you're, like, Hobbit-sized or something.

if you're going back to your former eating habits then you might lose some of it anyway. otherwise I guess you can try to lose it if you want, but if you're comfortable and happy being at this weight then I don't think it's a big deal.

That is kind of a lot to gain that shortly. I would try to lose some of it, but I wouldn't freak out or stress over it. You can make small efforts to gradually lose it, don't do anything drastic all at once, just do the typical things like eating only until you're full, eating a lot of healthy foods (fruits and vegetables and lean protein, etc.), enjoying "junk" foods in small amounts/moderation, try to get more exercise (stuff like taking the stairs more often, etc) That post yesterday in secret 5's thread about starting a running routine is helpful. You don't really need any special shoes to start walking/jogging, any sneakers work pretty much, and you can start small by walking interspersed with jogging a few days a week and work from there. I lost about four pounds in the last couple of weeks and I wasn't even good about my running routine, I didn't do it as often as I should've and I still saw some results

I wouldn't worry too much about weight gain beyond staying at your "normal" weight -- whatever weight you typically stay at (mine is about 140-45 lbs) is probably a good goal

Try to lose it if you want to lose it.

Don't let people here tell you you must have inherently horrible self esteem if you feel like losing fifteen pounds. As long as you're being healthy you can do whatever you want.

If you feel like there might be something up besides weight gain--like other symptoms--I suggest talking to a doctor? That's a lot for just winter break.

(Also, don't freak out. It might just be different scales or something).

I didn't even think about it being a medical issue, geez, that seems obvious, I feel stupid now

Actually anon if you can see a doctor it would probably be a good idea to, or at least mention it to your doctor next time you see them, cause that is kind of a lot of weight to gain in a short time (losing that much in a short time is not all that normal either)

I feel like 'But I can't tell' is an indication that anon isn't too bothered by this situation, but in general I'd agree with you - intentional weightloss is not that big a deal, and calorie-counting aps make it fairly easy for many people to do.

You might still be growing. A lot of people fill out in their early twenties.

Holiday eating, not working out etc. really does contribute. It does sound like a lot, but if going back to regular routines doesn't seem to do much in losing it, then make the extra effort if it still bothers you/if you really want to.

Wait and see for a while if going back to your normal life makes it go down again. Dieting (or 'trying to lose weight') can quickly lead to a vicious cycle of dieting. If you're not noticing a big difference anyway, leave it be for now!

'can quickly lead to a vicious cycle of dieting'

lol pointless scaremongering? I mean, OP is exhibiting zero signs of being bothered by this whole thing. I think you can calm the fuck down, they've got this.

I'd wait 4 weeks or so to adjust to a normal routine of normal dieting/exercising (whenever I came home over winter break I'd be more lazy and I walked a lot on campus), see if you lose any weight, and if not, I'd go to a doctor and see if there might be a medical issue underlying.

yeah, def see a doctor just in case, and then if you're okay and it was just the winter's habits, wait a month or so to see if your regular routines help you bounce back

if not, do little things instead of trying to lose a lot of weight at once, like switching out sweetened carbonated drinks for fruit juice or water, eating more fruit + veggies and less junk food and stuff with sugar, trying to get a little exercise (at least some walking, walking is good exercise, don't let anyone tell you otherwise), maybe a little limbering up? little things that don't make it tempting to quit after a few weeks or months

Exercise is very good for one's health but isn't shown to have much influence on weight. Obv we should all do it, but linking it to weight is just obviously misleading and it leads to people quitting their exercise routines when, surprise surprise, they realise it doesn't make them lose weight.

If you really want to lose weight, use a food logging ap/website and keep track of calorie intake. It works for most people, and technology makes it pretty easy to keep up with, and it gives you much more flexibility than just trying to follow strict dietary rules. On that note; fruit juice won't help - it's roughly as calorific as sweetened carbonated drinks, and depending on what you mean by 'juice' it may not be much healthier. (Unless you're squeezing it yourself in your kitchen, at least). Many forms of fruit are also highly calorific and won't help with weight loss, though much like exercise, they're necessary for staying in good health.

Given the rapidity of the gain I'd second the idea of seeing a doctor if you're able to. Odds are that it's nothing to worry about, but it's always better to get a sudden gain/drop in weight checked out if you can.

Also, this may be a silly question, but have you checked that the scales you're using are accurate? Last time I noticed a startling change in weight it was due to the machine being wonky.

Some of it might be poop weight. Have you been constipated at all lately?
