Yeah. Sometimes too much is too much.

Fanfic rants is made up of a bunch of jackasses who enjoy being offended and look for excuses to cry about how they are soooooooo victimized. Then they bash some 12 year old for knowing grammar, all of the terminology and theories related to LGBT issues, and what a trigger is or is not (which is apparently the source of some confusion).

Honestly, the rest of the internet would be better off if we forgot that place existed.

Yeah, I gotta agree. One can only handle so much negativity before it gets old/a major creativity buzzkill.

I heard this place was all about teh lulz at one point, but ever since one of the mods became a super SJW, the place was never the same, and it shows in the comments. There's too little fun and too much bullying in that comm, and I chose to leave rather than read hundreds of wanky comments.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-18 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
It used to be pretty good, yeah. There's still the odd good post here and there, but I honestly don't know why I still go there. It annoys and/or bores me more than anything these days.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-18 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
This is true of almost all of the comms like that. ffrants, bad_rpers_suck, stupid_free, fandom_wank, etc. They used to actually be funny, but they've turned into police states where people are so careful about only posting things that are "politically correct" that what ends up being posted just isn't funny anymore.

And if someone says one thing wrong, they'll get dogpiled in the comments. It's not about laughing at funny things anymore, now it's just about showing off for SJW cred.

To be fair, I did learn a bit about marysues and obnoxious tropes in the small time I spent watching that place. But that was far outweighed by the ugliness and the pathetic-ness of a bunch of people with WAY too much time and energy to waste on that shit.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-18 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
I still read it and I love it. Anything they bitch about I add to my to-do list for fanfic.

One day you have to write ONE fanfic containing every single one of their complaints in one story. Make it a Teen Wolf/Sherlock/SPN crossover with all the juggernaut ships so everyone will read it.

Hell, give me your list and I'll do it.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-18 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
The fun part was reading the fic by the people who posted there the most. It was always wonderfully terrible.

I've given them up too. There used to be some good writing meta to be had, but I don't know if I've just lost my taste for all the judgyness or if they have become too ridiculously opinionated, but meh. It's not worth checking anymore.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-18 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
I loathe that community.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-18 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's hilariously sad how seriously they take themselves and fancition.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-18 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
I used to look in on that place from time to time because I'd been linked to a couple of good posts that amusingly skewered some honest-to-goodness awful fics and cliches. I gave up on it because the number of posts I actually found interesting was miniscule compared to the number that involved extremely fandom-specific complaints about fic for fandoms I knew nothing about and complaints about things that are subject to opinion, like character interpretation.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-18 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
...lol OP and all the people up in this thread sound like butthurt people who were banned for good reason. Fare thee well~

Amen especially that one MOD who likes to bait in people so he can ban them. Not to mention it's the only com that I know that you are only allowed to use strikeout on the main post and not allowed to just edit it out, oh and that condescending rule where a person gets a one week ban and they have to e-mail the mods and tell them what rule they broke before they are allowed back in.

I wonder how long until his army shows up to defend the com.

Many years ago, it used to be a fairly decent community. Nowadays it's full of petty little complaints, misinformed rants, and painfully unfunny jokes like 'oh, you said he baled out the water instead of bailed? Was he throwing hay around lolol I am so witty and smart'. Ugh. I hate it when people mix words up like that, but I hate the people who obsessively snark about them even more.

This secret reminds me of fanfic_rants. No idea if that's what you're talking about. But I ended up leaving there too, for similar reasons, if not exactly the same ones.

It's funny because there's a hell of a lot more genuine viciousness now than there was back before it went all rabid SJW. Yeah, people laughed at bad fic, but it was more in a "ha ha isn't that funny" sense than the sort of dogpiling that goes on there these days.

The comm really took a turn for the SRS Unfunny when teleen and her associated twit friends were storming up the joint. Wore a lot of people's humors out, I think.

I read it and enjoy it, but then I'm not a writer. If I were, I'd probably feel feel the same way as the OP.

I don't think they're so bad SJW-wise; I've seen worse (mainly on tumblr, admittedly). I have to agree on the dogpiling, though - seriously, it's not necessary or helpful to tell someone over and over how badly they fucked up when they said [problematic thing] while venting and how this implies they're a terrible person, especially since they (gasp!) get defensive after the hundredth angry reply. They apologized already (like after the first reply, and several times after that), so stop yelling at them, FFS.

I'm still a member there, and I still read daily, but yeah, the social justice crowd is pretty high-strung these days, and it does make people feel... uncomfortable, unwelcome... attacked, really.

It's not fun any more. It makes me afraid to participate, afraid to post fic or rants or even comments, sometimes.
