If I'm looking for shippy fic, AO3 tends to have the better stuff.

Plotty gen I seem to mostly find on FFN. I don't think this means one is better than the other in any way at all.

Really? I don't hate ff.n at all, but it has many flaws, one of which is that it's a haven for 'Let's make these two act completely OOC so it's easier to pair them up!'.

AO3 is higher quality in general, but lower in volume - if I were looking for a plotty novel-length fic in a popular fandom I'd go there first, because most of the better authors at least crosspost there.

NAYRT, but a lot of the plotty novel-length fic on AO3 tends to be slash, so if you're not in the mood for slash, it's really not the place to look. FF.net, for all its faults, still tends to have more gen and het authors.

FF.net - Long, Epic 100,000+, A03 - Shorter, Shippy

Look, here's the thing about The Pit -

...you've got to know how to search. There is an option for filtering by # of reviews. (Not that # of reviews is a guarantee of quality - but it's a place to start ...)

The Pit - is still the best place to look for those long, epic 100,000+ stories - (especially in Harry Potter fandom.)

Not to start a - Het vs. Slash - flame war, but truth - A03 very, very slash friendly ... The Pit - more het friendly.

They both serve their own function and purposes - no need to judge either way.
