If I'm looking for shippy fic, AO3 tends to have the better stuff.

Plotty gen I seem to mostly find on FFN. I don't think this means one is better than the other in any way at all.

Some of my favorite fanfic ever was posted on ff.net and, as far as I can tell, only ff.net.

Mind you, it was mostly posted there about eight years ago, and only in a few select fandoms that to the best of my knowledge don't really have thriving live comms elsewhere, so maybe there's a difference there...

I think it depends on the fandom. If you're looking for western TV and movie fandoms, AO3 is better, but there are a lot of non-western fandoms that haven't made the move over to AO3 yet.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-18 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
I would be more likely to use A03 or another fanfiction site if they had a category for my favorite fandoms, except they don't. Mainly because the fandoms I frequent are a bit older. FF.net takes care of that problem because of it's large variety.

For some older fandoms, FF.net is all there is, really. There is quality there, but you just have to know how to pick and choose--and usually choose things before A03 became very popular. (Some of my favorite Labyrinth fics are here, and good lord those were posted way before 2009)

(Anonymous) 2013-01-18 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
There are a few gems at FF.net. You have to find them, alas.

Pretty much all I've found there is bad future/kidfic and people that don't know when to stop when it comes to whump.

I find that a lot of people cross-post to fanfiction.net, so it doesn't necessarily mean anything regarding the quality of the stories. Granted, it's the only place I've seen hilarious self-insert fic, but still; last I checked it had it's fair share of good stories, too.

yeah, you're a snob. I don't like reading on the Pit but there's some great stuff that's only available there, particularly from older fandoms. Even recently, I had one very talented fandom friend who was primarily posting to the Pit because she had been only an occasional lurker in fandom for a long time, and had only just started writing and making friends - she hadn't heard of AO3. FFN is a gateway. A lot of good people have started out there, or used it as a stepping stone between other forms of fandom. I started on BBSes and mailing lists myself but it was on FFN that I met people who got me into journal-fandom. Remember when LJ still had invite codes? The thing about the "good" parts of fandom is that they're a bit of a private treehouse - most people haven't heard of Dreamwidth or AO3, and even Livejournal wasn't included in this year's Technorati survey, but the Pit is much more accessible.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-18 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
FF.Net is just bigger than... anywhere else, I'd figure. Sturgeon's Law is in effect everywhere- it's simply more difficult to wade through the crap because it's ten times bigger. And, also, yeah, a lot of beginners write there, but I can't begrudge people getting started and not being great- we've all been there. I'm still there tbqh!

I wouldn't write off the whole site. What I do is if I can find a fic I like, I use the author's Favourites lists. This has found me many a good fic and saved me having to trawl through thousands of less-than-great fics for a couple of gems. :)

Eh, I don't hate the site, but I don't love it either. The only time I'll read anything on FFN these days is if it's linked from a community or is recced somewhere.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-18 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
While I do understand the feeling (my knee-jerk reaction is always to avoid ff.net if possible), it really depends on what you're looking for. If you're looking for slash, yeah, A03's probably your best bet. If you're looking for het or gen, there's a lot more of that on ff.net.

I do agree that I much prefer the A03 layout, and for ease of reading, A03 has ff.net beat by a mile. I like to read fics as a full work rather than having to click through chapters, and it's much easier to do that on A03.

I've found good fic on The Pit. If you're going to write off the whole site then that's your loss.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-18 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
No no. Don't hold back. Tell us how you really feel!

I still post to ff.net because I have "followers" there. They haven't all migrated to AO3 soooo.... judge away, I guess.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-18 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
There's lots of good fic on AO3, but I'm with you on the layout. It's such a mess to navigate and such a pain to read on and there's plenty of other good fic elsewhere. (Honestly I'd rather read fic in pink text on a Geocities mirror with all the layout images broken than have to stare at ff.net.)

I crosspost all of my fic so, it's both at AO3 and ff.net. There are different readerships, not everyone knows about AO3, etc.

Sure there is a lot of crap at ff.net because that's where most people start, but writing off the whole site means you're missing out on some good stuff.

If it comes as a rec from somebody who I know has solid recs I'll go check it out, but otherwise I avoid the site. And yeah, I admit that when people first rec a fic there I hesitate and have serious doubts about the quality. I'm sure there's good stuff, it's just that there is so much bad fic it kind of overwhelms anything good.

Good for you. For me, I'll stick with the Pit most of the time. Both LJ and AO3 are barely loadable on my Kindle, and that's where I read most of my fic from.

Have fun up on your pedestal.

God, their layout has gotten worse after I left the site.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-18 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
There's crapfic everywhere. It doesn't matter where you go. It's everywhere and it always will be. That's just life, OP.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-18 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
You're being judgemental.

I post on both sites, because not everyone has heard of AO3. For some people, FF is all they know. I definitely get the aversion to the site - there are a lot of things I dislike about it.

But there is some good fic and some good authors on there that are simply not posted elsewhere.
