There's an overwhelming amount of terrible stuff on both sites, which is why I barely read fic anymore. For anime/manga, ff.net is a little better. AO3 doesn't have fics from older series, and the sections from new series tend to be cluttered with generic smut from the kink memes and AUs. At least some of the writers on ff.net are trying.
