FF.Net is just bigger than... anywhere else, I'd figure. Sturgeon's Law is in effect everywhere- it's simply more difficult to wade through the crap because it's ten times bigger. And, also, yeah, a lot of beginners write there, but I can't begrudge people getting started and not being great- we've all been there. I'm still there tbqh!

I wouldn't write off the whole site. What I do is if I can find a fic I like, I use the author's Favourites lists. This has found me many a good fic and saved me having to trawl through thousands of less-than-great fics for a couple of gems. :)

I totally used to do that when I had more time to find/read fic.

I also used to look at the comments of fics I liked. And if anyone wrote a well thought out comment, I'd look to see if they had written stories or favorited stories.

+1 on both of these methods. Eventually you develop sort of a filter for scrolling through the main lists - although I'm sure I missed a few gems whose authors used creative lack of capitalization in their summaries for effect - but once you've found a good one it's much easier to favorite-hop.

I do that a lot too - surfing Favourites lists for fics good authors like. Especially in the HP fandom, which is bloody huge in it's own right.

Surfing favorites is an excellent way of finding good fic, ime. Granted, I don't always find specific things I'm looking for, but it still gives me some damn good gems.

"but I can't begrudge people getting started and not being great- we've all been there. I'm still there tbqh"

THIS THIS THIS. The attitude towards less experienced writers in fandom is repulsive. Has anybody considered that the high level of depression/artistic anxiety in fandom may be party caused by how RUDE fandom can be? I'm not talking leaving honest critique. I'm talking flaming, laughing behind people's backs, and otherwise flat out making fun of new writers.
