I don't read anything on FF anymore. Maybe there are some great fics, but it's not really worth it to shovel a pile of steaming shit in the hopes of finding a pearl beneath it all.

This. If they would just implement some kind of basic quality control measures (and I mean for stuff like spelling and grammar), then I'd consider going back to it. But when I encounter fics with summaries like "[Character] is die. What does [Character 2] do?" I just can't take the site seriously at all as a source for fiction.

But summaries like that make it so easy to skim past. The summary is usually at least a halfway decent predictor of the writing quality, so you don't even waste the time it would take to click and back-button. And with all the filters, you can narrow to exactly what you're looking so the list is smaller to begin with before you start hunting through for the good stuff.

But if you're not looking for something too specific, or in a popular fandom, yes, you'll probably be able to occupy yourself on AO3 for a good while before you get desperate enough to go to ff.n.

It's easy to skim past, yeah, but it's still a pain to have to skim past twelve pages of that garbage to find anything good even after using filters to narrow it down.

Also true. Again, size of the fandom plays a big role in whether it's worth the time.

fair enough

but you would, say, go read something if you saw it on a reputable rec list or if a friend with similar tastes to yours read it first and recommended it, no?

I think that's the difference between someone saying something reasonable like you and the op

AYRT. In that case, sure, I would. Someone else would have done the digging part for me and I'd be grateful. I just can't be bothered to spend time going through everything that has been posted.

Exactly what I was going to say.
