Right there with you, OP. I used to have fun finding the most ridiculous fics for my relatively middle-aged fandom (2 years old for the TV show, about 6 for the source material)--and only ever on ff.net. AO3 is the only place to find goodfic, as I literally went through EVERY fic in the section on ff.net and couldn't find a single one without extremely OOC characters, horrific grammar, barely-there plot that a third-grader would find predictable, or all of the above. Meanwhile, the AO3 section was full of some of the best fic I'd read in a long while.

That's not to say Ao3 was the only source of goodfic--I've read great stuff in the same fandom on LJ and tumblr as well; only that the people who don't write often or are only barely in fandom ONLY know ff.net, and that's where they flock. If you're a 'good writer' and you're posting stuff there, prepare to have your work overlooked and ignored.

Or prepare for 15 comments along the lines of, "omg!!!!!!!!! SO SMEXY POST NEXT CHAPPIE!!!!"
