I like the trolls, but their writing quirks are really annoying. And mostly pointless, since the characters have good enough voices without readers needing them to thp3A#K L1K3 T4ii%5 to tell the difference between them.

Yet another reason Karkat is the best troll tbh, his writing is by far the most legible

I saw someone on the MSPA forum once who took conversations between Dave and Karkat and switched nothing but their quirks, and it completely changed the tone of their interactions. Even something as simple as capslock does affect how the text reads - subconsciously or not, capslock reads as loud and tense, while Dave's lack of capitalisation and punctuation looks like a low monotone without particular affect.

Some of the quirks are difficult to read especially at first (dear blessed fuck, the new trolls) but I do think their quirks add to the audience's understanding of their speech patterns and of their character. It's not about just telling the difference between them.
