I like the trolls, but their writing quirks are really annoying. And mostly pointless, since the characters have good enough voices without readers needing them to thp3A#K L1K3 T4ii%5 to tell the difference between them.

If you think the Act Five trolls are bad, wait till you get to some of the later trolls. (And the character who types in neon orange...)

And yes real people type that way but it was mostly dying out before Homestuck fandom brought it back...

It's hit and miss, imo; some typing quirks really suit the characters and kind-of 'work' verbally, such as Karkat's, Eridan's, Gamzee's, and imo Terezi's, but others feel super-artificial and put-on, like Feferi's and Equius's.

Well, they are trolls.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-18 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
How much I like each troll tends to depend on how obnoxious their quirk is. Sorry, Terezi.

Uhg, it's like Megatokyo's leetspeak crap but more headache inducing.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-18 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
Greasemonkey has you covered:

http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/92288

(a Greasemonkey script that auto-converts troll text into plain English. Probably doesn't work on flashes.)

Otherwise, you really do get used to it, but I can see why it would be annoying.

Welp, yeah, I can't read that. I mean I can, but only if I want to spend far too much time decoding it and my eyes are not up to that.

Like people said, you get used to it.

And after Hivebent it doesn't happen every single panel.

Also, I think Hussie knows it's obnoxious and does it on purpose...

But it really adds a lot to their characters imo. I don't really find them that hard to read either but ymmv. (The set of trolls who comes in later are another story, but they're supposed to be annoying and they also don't get nearly as much screen time)

(Anonymous) 2013-01-18 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
even hussie gave up and started using a converter to write their pesterlogs/dialogues

he knows it is obnoxious as fuck

that's why he does it!

I personally have only met one person irl who had a typing quirk, and yeah, it was really, really annoying, because we were often working together on school assignments over instant messaging, so a lot of time that could have been used to finish homework faster was wasted in deciphering her texts

anyway, I suggest that you either:

a) soldier on, as this experience will help you with the worst quirks like mituna and kankri's, or

b) use a script like the one linked in the thread, as it should cover you for most of the instances of typing quirks; the downside to this is that it won't work in the interactive flash minigames (idk about the most recent ones with done in... html5, html6, or something?)

(Anonymous) 2013-01-18 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
If I had managed to get into that series I think I would've had to stop reading the second I got to the trolls.

[identity profile] aachren.livejournal.com 2013-01-18 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
Heh, you got farther than I did. But then, I can barely read any script that isn't standard English...I sight-read too many words for things like leetspeak or graffiti or that super fancy old English font to be legible for me.

Though, I also gave up on Homestuck 'cause having to remember to do all that clicking to get everything reminded me too much of work. Clearly, despite my age placing me in the videogame generation, I did not spend enough time actually playing those games.

[personal profile] tenebrais 2013-01-18 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
To answer the question, no, people generally don't talk like that unless they're roleplaying Homestuck. Trolls do because they are aliens, and the quirks are one of the things that make them alien.

The whole idea probably came from the fact that each of the kids has their own typing quirk, so Hussie decided to take that to its extreme for these secondary characters.

Sometimes it can be annoying, but from the way I see it, the troll quirks shows us a glimpse of the nuances of the troll's personalities that punctuation can't. And aside from some diehard fans, I think barely anyone ever uses them outside of the fandom. Don't give up on the comic just yet. :)

Roughly, the harder to read the quirk is, the less screen time that troll gets. Except maybe Terezi, but personally I never found hers hard to read. If anything, it gave me a stronger impression of her voice.

I know it seems like you'll never get used to it, but you'll totally get used to it. On my first readthrough, I skimmed everything Sollux said because I could hardly understand him. On my second readthrough, I had no more trouble with his than with Karkat's.

... that doesn't seem that hard to read at all? It took me a second to realize that the 2s were supposed to be S's but it's perfectly legible otherwise.

People try to do it on forums and places like DeviantArt too, and it is really fucking irritating.

In the time since submitting this secret, I have continued to read, and I have -- more or less -- gotten used to it. :-)

As an ESL, the troll-quircks exasperated me beyond reason. For some reason, Gamzee's was the hardest.
