The Land of the Bible Belt is giving you grief about being a virgin? Wat.

Not OP, but:

Wow. I'm an American and I was a virgin until after college. I never got any flak for it, and I hung out with some pretty sexually liberated/left leaning/non-religious individuals.

That's really weird that they would even care about it.

What's weird is why they even know in the first place. Why is whether or not someone is a virgin anyone's business?

Some people think everything is their business :-/

Sometimes it comes up in conversation, in my experience only with close friends.

OP

Whether you abstain from dating and sex for religious, personal, or practical reasons, the responses I have received pretty universally are along a range of negativity from "aww what a cute stupid child" to "wow frigid bitch" :P

That...sounds strangely un-American to the point that I (American) would say it's a peculiarity of American KDrama and KPop fans or the ones you've been hanging around. Americans are not particularly known worldwide for being sexually liberal.

This still sounds off to me, but not dating is very different from not having sex in American culture. Although personal opinions may differ, being a female virgin is genuinely pretty narrowly defined as a woman who has not had vaginal sex. Although young teen pregnancies are unfortunately common in the US, average age of sex is around 17, which coincides with the average age of consent; this is higher than many other countries. Plenty of young women don't have sex until their twenties or thirties, and it is certainly common for people to wait for marriage.

But that's sex itself. You're combining dating with sex which, despite what American TV might portray, is not an absolute, necessary, or expected combination. An older, teenage girl and especially an adult woman who has never dated would be considered unusual in American culture and would probably get asked "You've never dated before?" out of surprise. But that is very different from virgin-shaming.

I'm guessing you live up north? In my experience, that shit isn't unusual at all and I'm American too.
