Not a movie, but Dexter the TV show is 10000000x better than the book. I picked up the first book after watching season one and I couldn't even finish it. The author's writing style was just too wtf.

Seconded so hard. The thing that struck me most was how flat the characters are in the books. Also, be glad you stopped at the first book: the third book undergoes a sudden shift in genre as Dexter's Dark Passenger is revealed to be a demon. I wish I were making that up.

Omg, wut. I thought the whole Dark Passenger thing in the book was ridiculous to begin with, but that is just... why? It's so much creepier and more compelling when he's just a fucked up human being. Demons need not be involved.

Yes! The third book was pretty awful. I tend to see them as AUs of Dexter's life. :)

I did prefer the author's treatment of Doakes as opposed to the series's treatment, however.
