Movies That You Think Are Better Than The Book

Like the thread title says.

I think Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (the first one) us in fact better than the book.

A Scanner Darkly, hands down. The book is a good read, don't get me wrong, but the movie fucked me up.

The most obvious choice to me is The Godfather

The Godfather.

Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust is so much better than Demon Deathchase. I will never read that book again.

Not a movie, but Dexter the TV show is 10000000x better than the book. I picked up the first book after watching season one and I couldn't even finish it. The author's writing style was just too wtf.

I don't really think it's 'better' than the books, but I did love the lotr movies with all my heart for the beautiful casting + scenery. Usually those adaptations are butchered right, left, and centre, but the lotr movies were pretty good to me.

Lord of the Rings. All of them. I enjoyed the stories of the books but Tolkien is long-winded as fuck; it was far less painful to see someone who obviously loved the source material adapt the never-ending descriptions and base characters into scenery porn and distinct, interesting heroes.

They may have given too much cowbell with the Hobbit, but I at least liked that you could tell the dwarves apart.

Interview With A Vampire, even taking into account Brad Pitt being whiny as all get out. The book was so boring.

Schindler's List. The book is interesting, but it isn't really something you read for entertainment. Reads more like a report in some places than a novel.

Clockwork Orange. The book is pretty good, but the movie is really more approachable to everybody.

Jaws, Lord of the Rings, some of the Dr. Seuss adaptations (not the new, feature-length movies, but the cartoons that Dr. Seuss had a hand in making.)

Also thought the play Wicked was better than the book, if that counts.

Probably going to hell, but I think the Emma Thompson / Ang Lee Sense and Sensibility beats the book.

I love Austen, but S&S could've done with another rigorous edit to strip out the clunky artifacts of the original epistolatory version and beef up the dialogue.

I forgot one! The Watchmen. The ending of the movie The Watchmen was SOOOOOOO much better than the comic. Giant fucking squid. What were they thinking?

I liked the film of To Kill A Mockingbird better than the book. The book was very very very good, and as far as message goes, belonged in the category of Some Anvils Need To Be Dropped, but the film was far more subtle and still did just as good a job if not better of conveying the message(s), IMO. But maybe I'm just biased because I saw the film first, and when I was quite young at that.

On the other hand, the deeper character development for Cal and Dill and Maudie Atkinson and Mrs Dubose that the book had but the film cut out was a real treat for me when I read it.

I feel like the movie version of Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas renders the book largely redundant.

I liked The Hunger Games more as a film than as a book. I think it was done incredibly well, and the way they portrayed certain things were far more powerful than they were from Katniss's monologue.

Wrinkle in Time. I KNOW Meg is supposed to be immature and annoying in the book but OMG I wanted someone to just .... well what I wanted someone to do isn't actually appropriate so ... anyway movie Meg was a hell of a lot more likeable. Still a little bratty and a bit obnoxious but not so much that I lost all respect for her.

/unpopular opinion

So far, I think The Hobbit might be. The book was wonderful but the dwarves are more distinct and likable in the movie, IMO.
