I haven't seen Brotherhood yet. I watched the other FMA series first. Loved it. And there are plenty of strong women in that version as well. Winry, Riza, Sheska. I'm glad to hear that's true of Brotherhood as well.

Brotherhood is basically the manga, animated. It has even more badass female characters than the first anime, imho. :)

I had been hoping that Brotherhood picks up where FMA leaves off, but a friend who's really into it told me it's more of a parallel series. Which
:( because I really wanted some resolution to the FMA plotline but :) otherwise.

That sounds about right. There are movies for the first series if you want more plot. The manga has an extra chapter after it finished its run but no extra anime episodes.

I'm having a hard time convincing my husband to watch Brotherhood with me because apparently while the two series begin in the same way, they diverge after a bit (I gather that the first one followed the existing manga until there was no more and then went its own way and that second series follows the manga more faithfully), and he's worried it'll be weird watching these two shows that are the same but different. If that sentence even makes any sense. LOL

I had the same worries at first too. When I finally decided to give Brotherhood a try, I was really glad I did. It's amazing. I love it.
