With Anne of Green Gables, for me the first movie and the first book are about equal in terms of quality. I think the second movie was better than the books it adapted because it was a good synthesis and made for a better story. The third movie just sucked and had no relation to the characters I loved. And the less said about the prequel movie, the better.

I'm thinking I did not see all those movies. I definitely saw the one that follows the first book, but I'm not sure I saw any others. Possibly saw the second one. Definitely didn't see a prequel movie. :)

Anne of Avonlea is the second one and Anne the Continuing Story is the third one. The second one they took bits from different books and made a coherent, overarching story out of them (the books tend to be very episodic). The third one they just made up a story, and it shows. They set it during WWI even though that messes up the timeline because WWI was during Anne's children's time in the books. And then it messed up the timeline on Road to Avonlea too.

Okay. Yes. I saw Anne of Green Gables and Anne of Avonlea but no others.

WTF to making up a plot for that last movie. *shakes head*

One of my favorite moments in the Anne books is the very end of one of them, I forget which, and she's watching her kids sleeping and there's a shadow on the wall over her son's bed and it's just so lump in the throat because you know it's prefiguring his death in the war. That's a great moment.

The books, those first two movies plus Road to Avonlea were a big part of my childhood. The newer ones, made more recently, were awful.

Yes, that moment was perfect. Montgomory wasn't the best writer, and the books in some ways got worse later on, but she could write a perfect moment or scene that just captured the emotion.

Have you read the prequel book, Road to Green Gables I think it is called? I thought it was actually pretty decent, unlike the movie prequel.

Is the prequel book about the Cuthberts cause that could be really interesting?

No, sadly. It is about Anne. But the author gets Anne in a way I couldn't have imagined anyone but Montgomery getting. There are some really heart-wrenching parts, but she balances it well with some people like teachers looking out for Anne. It works well as a prequel, knowing that Anne is going to get the things she is dreaming about.

Ah, okay. Cool. I might check that out. :)
