Wait, WHAT? what?

I think it's depressing that someone thinks "I like the women on this show" is something they can't say publicly. And then people in the comments immediately start saying negative things about characters. It's just a weird dynamic.

Secrets aren't always submitted because they feel like they "can't say it publicly". Some are submitted just to keep the community going, or because they're interesting, or somewhat controversial, or the person doesn't have an account, or whatever.

It sounds like you don't think people should be making negative comments at ALL, because dude, this is mild. I think it's depressing when you have to bite your tongue when discussing a character instead of being able to discuss the pros and cons both.

No, I said I don't understand why people put positive comments as secrets. If that's your bag, then fine.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-18 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
you're not the only one wondering that, anon. I was curious why this was a secret at all.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-18 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
Right? Somebody needs to nut up and make a 'Hawkeye isn't badass, this is why the people who keep saying that are wrong' secret. That would be worth wanking over.

(I happen to think that is a terrible opinion that relies on a ridiculous dichotomy in which a woman is only allowed to be badass if she is completely perfect, never messes up, and has no emotional investment in any male character. I think manga/Brotherhood Riza with her traumatic backstory and her infinitely complex relationship with Roy is 1000 times more interesting than she would be if she was only 'strong.' But at least that's something we can have a real difference of opinion over.)

No, I said I don't understand why people put positive comments as secrets.

Liking the women is a secret but hating on Hawkeye is something people do in their real names. Typical.

Yeah, okay. You were saying a bit more than that. Since positive secrets were explained elsewhere, I'll leave that part be.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-18 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
OK, and then I rephrased the 'hating on' to 'negative comments' and that means I don't believe anyone should ever make negative comments?

No, I meant what I said. It seems typical of fandom to me, in a sad way, that people are more willing to attach their names to negative comments than to positive ones. If everything was anon, I wouldn't have said anything.

After reading your other comment, it seems I was misunderstanding how anonymity works in fandom_secrets culture, which is probably my fault because this is my first time commenting here. It seems that people submit secrets because they want the audience here to see them rather than because they are actually "secrets." "Secret" to me would mean "I am unwilling to put the exact same content on a blog with my name attached to it. But perhaps the nature of the community has evolved, in a way that I didn't fully grasp before commenting here.

I hope that clears it up.

New anon and I have no idea what you are trying to say. I get the topics you're talking about but what is the point you're trying to make?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-18 05:00 am (UTC)(link)
I said it in the comment above.

Nothing more to be said on this topic as far as I'm concerned.
