I do think they fridged his character (isn't killing off the "love interest" to provide angst for and/or to provide motivation for another character to act a particular way pretty much the definition of fridging?)which is why I hated his death where I could make my peace with Tosh (hated her dying, but at least it was well done which is more than I can say about the rest of her development on the show) and Owen, but I don't think they did it because they wanted to 'bury the gays'. I think they just wanted to reboot the show and after killing off Tosh and Owen,getting rid of the Hub etc. he was the final thing to get rid of and it also left Jack footloose and fancy free to screw around with various other new characters.

But what did Ianto's death motivate Jack to do? Nothing as far as I could see.

According to RTD it was supposed to motivate Jack to kill Steven by, I assume, essentially destroying all his hope. Or something.

Oh yeah, I know that's his official excuse but I don't buy it. Nothing about their relationship in COE said to me that Jack would be all that upset over losing Ianto (prior to his death scene, that is).

Well all that probably proves is that the writing wasn't very good not that the intent wasn't there. Par for the course really.

A definite possibility but I don't think RTD was interested in their relationship. I could be wrong.

That's a distinct possibility also it would certainly explain a lot about the writing for them beyond the charge of mediocre writers. But then again the relationship only happened because RTD decided it should and continued despite the virtual none writing for it in s1 because he decided he should and he certainly didn't do it because he wanted to please the fans of the couple. So if he didn't create and continue the relationship because he thought there was a story he was interested in telling with them then I have to assume like the alleged 'nine hysterical women' he did it because he wanted to see 'two hot guys together'. Which is also a possibility.

But even if that were true and he wasn't really interested in the relationship and/or had always intended to show that Jack didn't really give a crap about Ianto and was just slumming with him because he couldn't have who he really wanted Gwen, The Doctor, Angelo whoever whatever I doubt that would stop RTD from then using the relationship to create maximum angst for Jack's storyline if that's the story he decided he was now going to tell that season. It's not as if Torchwood has ever allowed character consistency to get in the way of plot advancement. So not caring about the relationship and using it to serve a particular plot point probably wouldn't be all that mutually exclusive.
