feel free to spoil me for cote i will never watch it

But they killed pretty much everyone? And it wasn't out of nowhere the whole thing of their relationship was jack knowing this was a blip in his undtermined lifespan. Thrir relationship was cued in with a stopwatch.

So... why do you think this was so gratuitously gay fridgey?

Sorry if this makes no sense.

Seriously. Almost everyone dies, and Torchwood has a fair number of gay/bisexual/pansexual characters so of course some of them are going to die.
Plus if you're going to throw a fit about Ianto, why not about Tosh as well?

Plus there was that radio drama right before COE where Ianto angsted for like a good five minutes about how he was going to just be a blip in time to Jack someday. To me it was really, really obvious that he was going to die. Still very sad, but obvious.

Yeah, but that particular mini season was so intensely badly written and full of plot holes, even worse than the seasons prior to it, that it was espcially annoying. Had they written that scene as anything other than "Ianto bein shit stupid", people might have been more accepting of his demise.

I seriously don't get it. I mean in a series where the majority of the main cast (3/5, IIRC, possibly 4/5) was shown on screen to have bisexual relationships, how is killing any one of them "fridging"? At the end of that series EVERYBODY dies and only 2 people remain alive: 1 straight and 1 pan (though I believe his term is omnisexual. It was coined before "pansexual" became a thing).

So yeah, even though I hate that Ianto died, I'm kinda confused at the rage.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-18 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
I....thought they were? I mean, I wasn't in the fandom, and I'm sure that's not the only reason people were upset, but even from where I was standing, the fury over Ianto's death was truly epic.

Ah... I love me some stale wank!

(also Children of the Earth was the best thing that Torchwood ever did. IJAF)

Wait...is that TW Jack/Ianto? Because people lost their shit over that. Where have you been if you think people weren't upset about that whole thing? It was ridiculous.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-18 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
What I was thinking.

[personal profile] fauxkaren 2013-01-18 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, like Torchwood fandom had an embarrassing meltdown over Ianto's death.

Perhaps this person is new to Torchwood?? So he or she wasn't around when it all happened?

[personal profile] unicornherds 2013-01-18 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
I stared at the secret for a long time thinking I must be seeing it wrong because yeah, lost their shit indeed.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-18 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
I wasn't even anywhere near the fandom and I still caught the tails edges of it.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-18 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously. The Ianto memorial wall makes me ashamed to live in Cardiff.

*cough*

Um, actually there was kind of a massive fandomwide shitstorm of rage. Or maybe it was just among the people I was exposed to? Mind you, the people upset about Bury Your Gays were drowned out by fangirls who were pissed that their ship got sunk, but I think I might actually be able to find a couple of gay-related reaction articles from back then...

Are you fucking kidding me? The meltdown that ensued when Ianto died pretty much killed the fandom. Were you not actually there or...?

A) How is this a good example? They also killed like, everyone else, plus the (living) protagonist is pansexual and got an agnsty gay love story in the next series, too.

B) People were furious, for various reasons including this one.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-18 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
lol what year is this?

and like everyone said, it's Torchwood for fuck's sakes. they didn't kill Ianto because he was gay (in fact he wasn't gay at all but whatever), they killed him because they hate for their fans to be happy

(Anonymous) 2013-01-18 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
From what I remember, people were livid when Ianto died. RTD added fuel to the fire. It was a mess.

I didn't necessarily mind that Ianto died. I just hated the way he died. That was embarrassing.

A lot of people were upset. Not everyone was upset exclusively - or even primarily - because of "bury your gays," sure. Some people were sad that Ianto died because they like the character and some people were sad because they liked the Jack/Ianto ship and... there's nothing wrong with that? It's not always required that you make Killing Gay Characters is Such A Cliche your top priority when you are upset that a character who happens to be gay gets killed off. Besides, it's not like no one was upset specifically for that reason or that people who were upset for other reasons weren't aware of how this plot fit a problematic trope.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-18 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
I do think they fridged his character (isn't killing off the "love interest" to provide angst for and/or to provide motivation for another character to act a particular way pretty much the definition of fridging?)which is why I hated his death where I could make my peace with Tosh (hated her dying, but at least it was well done which is more than I can say about the rest of her development on the show) and Owen, but I don't think they did it because they wanted to 'bury the gays'. I think they just wanted to reboot the show and after killing off Tosh and Owen, getting rid of the Hub etc. he was the final thing to get rid of and it also left Jack footloose and fancy free to screw around with various other new characters.

OP I think there was more upset and protest than they would have ever imagined. Not sure what else you would expect!!

"More people weren't furious?" People threatened RTD's life and created a giant shrine to Ianto in the middle of Cardiff. A LOT of people were furious.

In any case, TW killed just about everyone so no I don't agree that it's fridgey at all. If it had been uniquely Ianto I'd agree you have an argument, but... only Gwen and Jack even survived of the team once the series was over.
