I think animal abuse is intensely triggering for a lot of people. When it's written, it may actually come across as more graphic than an actual photo of the abuse may. As this issue is intensely disturbing to many people, I do feel it should be included in trigger warnings. It's not something like "Trigger warning: Tissue paper."

I am deathly afraid of needles and will back-button when they're included in fiction without a warning, but it doesn't absolutely have to be included in trigger warnings. If there's a warning for heroin abuse in a fic, I will know to not even consider reading the fic, however.
