And the way Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr work by letting you share other people's content, actually displaying it rather than just posting links, means people are less likely to add their own commentary than they would've done back in the day.

As for your comment below, I feel exactly the same way. When I got into fandom ten years ago meta was such a default part of the experience that I never thought of it being something fandom in general might dispense with...
