Yeah, but honestly, that's not even just a tumblr thing. LJ, for instance, still allows for discussion - but on a lot of the fan communities I've belonged to there, there's been hardly any, and there's not a lot to be found elsewhere. I think a lot of it's a mark of the new!internet - I mean, if you look at Facebook even, people don't talk about anything there except how gross their baby's poop smells and what they had for breakfast.

And the way Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr work by letting you share other people's content, actually displaying it rather than just posting links, means people are less likely to add their own commentary than they would've done back in the day.

As for your comment below, I feel exactly the same way. When I got into fandom ten years ago meta was such a default part of the experience that I never thought of it being something fandom in general might dispense with...
