Discussion isn't as common because the way tumblr works actively discourages discussion, though. It's much easier to just pass along the latest fandom jokes or gifs than it is to have in-depth discussion, especially because archiving them is next to impossible.

yes and i feel it's all connected, at least as far as western fandoms go.

back in metafandom's heydays, there used to be meta entries that generated 100+ comments worth of discussion and you could see the effect this sort of discussion had on fic.

i feel that before, fandom was ruled by writers/essayist and now it's riding more on visual arts? and visual arts tend to be more reductive? idk how to express my thoughts on this. because my thoughts on this are half-formed/a mess orz

Yeah, but honestly, that's not even just a tumblr thing. LJ, for instance, still allows for discussion - but on a lot of the fan communities I've belonged to there, there's been hardly any, and there's not a lot to be found elsewhere. I think a lot of it's a mark of the new!internet - I mean, if you look at Facebook even, people don't talk about anything there except how gross their baby's poop smells and what they had for breakfast.

And the way Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr work by letting you share other people's content, actually displaying it rather than just posting links, means people are less likely to add their own commentary than they would've done back in the day.

As for your comment below, I feel exactly the same way. When I got into fandom ten years ago meta was such a default part of the experience that I never thought of it being something fandom in general might dispense with...
