Why oh why would you want to be a BNF? I've been one and I've had friends who were one. Yeah it can be flattering when people say "hey I know you!" but there's a lot of trouble that goes along with it. My friends have had all kinds of creeps IMing them (fortunately, I refused to talk to anyone I didn't know after my first one who I blocked within a few minutes), you have an easier chance to be plagiarized and you have to be careful what you say or you'll be viewed as a wanky nut and end up on Fandom_Wank.

However, if you really want to be a BNF, fanfics aren't the only way. I find being active and speaking your mind is probably the quicker to gain BNF status than fanfics. Be active in the comm of your fandom and be knowledgeable on the series so you can answer any question that is asked. Don't just know the series, study it. If you want quicker results pick a smaller fandom.

There are other things you can do too, get some Photoshop tutorials and learn how to make icons. If you're in a manga fandom, learn how to scanlate and be the first one each week to release the scanlated scans. Again if you're in a manga fandom have an account at one of the upload sites (mediafire for example) and always make sure it's up to date with the releases so when someone asks for a volume/chapter you can quickly post the link without having to take time to upload it. Be creative in getting your name out there and come up with other ideas of things you can do. Again a smaller fandom will get you quicker results.

being a big fish in a little pond doesn't carry the same weight as being a big fish in a big pond. having 100 fans who adore you and hang on your every word and having name recognition among those 100 fans is not the same as having 1000 fan name recognition.

all that aside, your suggestions are good and valid for getting a smaller fandom out there and getting more love for it. you are right. spearheading a small fandom into the public view will get your name to the top of the list for the small fandom and give you the satisfaction of spreading your fandom for the masses.

The good thing about starting with small fandoms it gives you the opportunity to gradually move up to bigger fandoms. Because if you already have a following and you start talking about and moving towards participating in , some of those fans will move with you, which makes you more noticeable in your new fandom.

It's very hard to become a BNF in an established large fandom. The Harry Potter fandom probably has the most famous BNF but that fandom wasn't that big when they started gaining their fans (notice they're all gone now too, BNF status doesn't last forever, even in big fandoms). If lucky you can find a small fandom that will become large.

But to become a BNF of a large fandom, without working your way up, can be done. One way is to find a large fandom that is in decline, which has a lot of it's main people leaving. When a fandom is in decline there's always a bunch of people who don't want to let go, therefore if someone jumps in and starts posting a lot they'd probably move up to BNF status fairly quickly simply because everyone will know them as the person who's trying to save the fandom.

The other way to become a BNF in a large (and active) fandom is to stick with your OTP. Most pairings have their own separate comm (this was even true back during the old mailing list days), which are smaller than the main fandom comms but still around the size of a medium sized fandom. Squee like crazy whenever your chapter/show/book is released and you see something on your OTP, if your OTP is non-canon post wild theories on how it will become canon or on how it doesn't need to be canon, rec all kinds of fic and art, etc.
