I don't see what the big deal would be if he were - it's not like any of the others are/were hot and sexy.

He's not British.

Well, technically, neither is John Barrowman, and I want him to get every role under the sun. And then maybe under (or over) every role under the sun.

[personal profile] jennacorinth 2013-01-20 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
Yes he is, he was born in Glasgow.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-20 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
How is John Barrowman not British? Because he lived in the USA for a while & learned how to speak with an American accent?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-20 09:16 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah I've seen some American Barrowman stans try and argue he's American, even though he's lived 3/4 of his life in the UK, including being born here. Oh and he often says he's proud to be British, including when he presented a live broadcast from the Queen's jubilee celebrations.

I like him, but I'm not an obsessive stan, I've just seen him on stage once in a musical and of course on telly a lot over the years, but it just annoys me when I see those US fans being so ridiculous.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-19 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
...if that's the major complaint, it's ridiculous.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-19 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
And Hugh Laurie isn't American.

And House wasn't a character that had been around for half a century when he started playing him.

Chauvinism is so boring.

I'm just pointing out that your analogy is a bit off, is all.

Oh, and I'm American, just FYI.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-19 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
What bit of difference does it make? It's an actor playing a character, not an actor playing an actor.
fenm: Fish Eye from "Sailor Moon SuperS" (Default)

[personal profile] fenm 2013-01-19 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not saying it does. I'm just saying that I don't find comparing House (or any new created character played by a different nationality then they're playing) to The Doctor (who's been played by Britons for half a century) to be a very convincing argument. The person who made the comparison to James Bond makes a much better case.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-19 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
And I'm saying that if an actor can pull it off, it shouldn't make a damn bit of difference.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-20 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
How do you feel about RDJ playing Sherlock Holmes then?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-19 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
What?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-19 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh good, it's not just me who could not comprehend that word usage then?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-20 08:34 am (UTC)(link)
Except... he... was?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-20 09:03 am (UTC)(link)
Sherlock Holmes was but Dr. Gregory House was not.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-19 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I think only two Bonds have actually been English. The others have been Welsh, Scottish, etc.

Also, the new Superman movie is going to be played by an Englishman, Batman was Welsh, Lincoln was English, etc. Frodo, Sam, and Aragorn were American.

I really think it doesn't matter. I think more to the point, his acting isn't that great and unlike Matt Smith, he doesn't have the weird face that makes his youth less pronounced.

Uh, James Bond isn't English. He's canonically half Scottish/half Swiss. One of the actors who has played him was Australian.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-20 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
No, his parents were Scottish and Swiss. He was English.

...? He went to Fettes, and he distinctly identifies as Scottish in the last chapter of The Man With The Golden Gun. I can see why you'd see him as British but not as English.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-20 09:17 am (UTC)(link)
Yes you are right, he is definitely Scottish, and anyone who watches Skyfall will be reminded of that fact!
thene: The Joy is facepalming at you. (facepalm)

[personal profile] thene 2013-01-20 09:19 am (UTC)(link)
I suspect anon was conflating 'British' and 'English'. :/
