What do you do after posting a new fic/new chapter?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-19 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I often try to make my fic posts late in the evening so I can just wind down and fall asleep afterwards. (My fandoms are all small enough that I don't have to worry about them getting buried before the next time people show up to read stuff). I sometimes just curl up and go quiet for a few minutes to 'let it go', or take a walk, or even pray (as a sort of 'thank $deity i finished that damned thing'). I used to feel pretty anxious until feedback rolled in (or failed to) but I've got calmer about it over the years and in most cases I don't feel fretful any more.

Do you guys have any post-uploading habits like that?

I used to obsess and constantly refresh my stats page to see how many hits I got. But that was depressing and anxiety inducing so I try not to do that anymore. I try to post it then get up and away from the computer and do something totally distracting.

Aw, that's so sweet <3

No, there's no use. My fics never get any kind of feedback - I'm the only one in all of my fandoms.

Well, OK, there was this one work that was created for a fandom of two, people loved it.

And also recently somebody came across my works for a fandom that they didn't know existed - it seems that they also liked them a lot.

This is even more stupid considering the fact that right now I'm writing a freaking 20k+ WIP
And I'm posting it
Dunno why

ayrt

I once wrote a 20k crossover fic as a surprise present for one person. It was TOTALLY worth it.

Aw, I'd love such a present. No, I'd fucking adore it.

Basically, I just write it because I like writing it. But there's no reason whatsoever to post the wretched thing. But I do. *shrugs*
Maybe it's 'cause I don't want my fellow fan to discover a nearly-empty AO3 category when they finally appear from nowhere

If I'm in the writing mood, and I have a good idea of where I'm going with it I go back to writing again. If not, I'll just chill and surf the net, play a video game, or take a walk out side if the weather is nice.

I get anxious too, really bad. one e-mail from FF.net or AO3 and i was jittery for at least an hour afterward no matter what the e-mail was about. Right now I'm in a tiny fandom, and feedback can take days if I get any at all. It's kinda helped me relax on that end, and made fic writing more fun.

I try to make it the last thing I do on the computer, and shut down. Also, I ignore the post for about a week, or turn off comment/email notifications if I have them (a weird blessing to not having a paid account means less waiting on them for anon fic memes?).

And then I make a cup of tea, or jump on the exercise bike to make some use of those silly anxiety-over-internet-things nerves, or overeat because I'm a baby.

I get really anxious about hits, kudos, and reviews, so I usually end up doing something else until the edge of my anticipation has been taken off. I'm in a really rare ship rn, and it makes me sad that my inbox is no longer swamped with kudos and reviews, but ah well, I've never loved a ship as much as I do my current OTP, it's a small sacrifice.

I like posting my fics/chapters really super late at night/early in the morning so I'll maybe have a nice surprise sitting in my inbox when I wake up later.

...this is also because I usually write between the hours of 10pm and 5am, and if I finish a oneshot in that time (or before 6am if I know that sleeping will ruin my inspiration) I'll just post it immediately after a quick run-through for typos. but, you know, not the only reason i post late at night...

This works really well for the epic fic I'm working on...not so well for the oneshots, because those tend to be focused on a rarepair or two whose fandom consists of me and...maybe three other people. Maybe.

I tend to obsessively refresh my stats page too, particularly the one for the epic fic. I like seeing how many people are reading it, even if they don't leave a review. Just seeing them come back every week is nice too.

I also tend to post before I go to bed to take the edge off. :) Not only fics, but things like GIFs I made and things too. Alternatively, if I don't go to sleep, I go read fics in one of my other fandoms, or watch funny videos or something - that usually distracts me pretty well.
