In my experience, stories--fanfiction or original--that do that are universally terrible. Having never read any of your fics, I can't say for sure if this applies to you or not, but even so, it just sounds like the worst idea.

Not necessarily - I read a pretty cool YA fantasy series that did that. The idea of it was that the main character was sending journals of his adventures to his friends. His journals were written in first person, obviously, and his friends' adventures were written in third.

It worked.

I can see I'm not going to convince you, and you certainly aren't going to convince me. Either you have had terrible luck, or you have very limited tastes in fiction. Well, sucks to be you either way.
