Proof you're not talented enough right there. When first person's done wrong, it sounds like the author, not the character...and most of it does.

That was supposed to sound like the author, I was answering as myself.

I'm trying to come up with any characters I write in the first person who might respond to you, but many of them don't come from a background where discussing writing point-of-view makes a lot of sense. (There's one I've occasionally written in the second person as a source-material-based affectation.)

Writing convincingly in the first person is no more difficult than writing convincing dialogue. If you have the character's voice, you're good.

Now, if you have an idiosyncratic perception of what characters' voices are, you might believe all first person fics you read are terrible, but that's a matter of opinion.
