Trans Question (Possibly offensive)

(Anonymous) 2013-01-20 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
I was struck recently by the realisation that I've always though of trans as male -> female, transition, and very rarely as the other way around.

I didn't disbelieve it as a thing, I just never considered it. Then came across a medical piece talking about how much easier the former was from a medical perspective, to achieve.

Is there a similar rate in the number of trans women, and trans men. Or is there a difference in how common per capita rate of each is (i.e. are there more trans women then trans men?)?

I've heard of more FTM than MTF people, but that's in no way statistic data.

Don't have the precise stats to hand, but I recall that data gathered in the US and some European countries suggests that there are significantly more transwomen than transmen. However, not having gone into the sampling methodology I'm not sure how reliable they are.

It used to be thought that trans women were more common than trans men by a ratio of about 3:1 (this would be when I first saw any stats on the topic, about 10 years ago) but, for the reason you explain (and also because of doctors' discriminatory attitudes), that may well have simply been due to trans men not seeking medical support to transition at the same rates as trans women and that may well be changing over time.

Like a couple others have mentioned, trans women have generally been thought to outnumber trans men. But it's probably difficult to tell how much of that is actually due to there being more trans women, and how much of it is due to perception and how trans people are accounted for. For example, any statistics based on people seeking a medical transition may fail to reflect a large number of trans people.

In general, I find that the number of trans women you encounter vs. trans men can depend a lot on the community in which you look. I feel like trans men are better represented in my area than trans women, in terms of visibility and social opportunities. But I imagine there are also a lot of trans women who may just not be as visible.
