I'm sure they'd love to, if Christopher Tolkien would get the stick out of his ass and let them do it.

But you know he won't.

*waits for the day the Estate passes to one of his sons...*

I suspect the price for buying the movie rights to the Silmarillion from Christopher Tolkien would be a Silmaril.

Why should he, though? I mean, honestly? Saying that he's got "a stick out of his ass" because he won't let them... is there actually something inherently wrong with him not wanting to let the Silmarillion be adapted, by Peter Jackson or by anyone?

Sometimes it's good to just let a book stay a book. Not everything has to be made into a movie. :/

It's more the way he's holding on to the rights to the books? I think he's said something to the effect that the Tolkien Estate has and wants nothing to do with the films and that's rubbing a lot of people the wrong way.

Well, it's his right to do that though. And it's also his right not to want to have anything to do with the movies (and it makes sense because my understanding is that he and the family don't much like them).

I don't think there is any helping the fact that some people will be annoyed by his decision and have it rub them the wrong way, but I also don't think that it's fair to say there is something inherently wrong with him because he's made a decision that a lot of fans don't like.

I'm not sure what the entire family's stance on the movies are, but at least two members of the family do like the movies and one of them is kind of estranged from the family because of his wants more support from the Estate for the movies. The supporters are the grandson and great-grandson of JRR IIRC. The Wikipedia article on JRR's descendants is a good place to start reading about the family tension.

Since the whole family is not against the movies, I guess people are wondering if "no more movies!" is really what the family decided on and not just C pulling rank and seniority over them. And yes, fans are butt hurt and they'll continue to be butt hurt.

At least one grandson (or great grandson, I'm not sure which) visited the set and got a roll as a background Gondorian in one of the Osgiliath scenes (he was handing out weapons).

+1

I would kill to see more of Tolkien's work adapted into films (I long for the day to see The Fall of Gondolin in all it's glory). But, at the end of the day, I know Christopher Tolkien is probably, bar JRR, the person who knows Middle-Earth best, in all it's stages, and I know that JRR left the rights in Christopher Tolkien's hands, and I trust that he knows better than anyone else what Tolkien would have wanted.
