I don't know much about , or the show in question, but I think it's not uncommon. Actors and other celebrities are often very narcissistic and needy, wanting fame to feed that narcissism. Thing is, once they get power and fame, they get worse and the people around them just tell them how wonderful they are, and they have fans which makes it worse.

I think Chevy Chase no doubt got away with it in his film days because he was worth money, and was the star, now he's not so important as a box office draw in terms of people turning on to watch him, so his behaviour led to him being sacked.

One of the worst cases of hidden vileness was Steve McQueen, he was really awful, even to the point of physical and sexual abuse of his wives. Vile on set as well, but such a massive star that he got away with it all and it came out years after his death.

Well, Chevy Chase thought that flinging around the word n****r when he was angry on the set was perfectly acceptable.

But yeah, the media forgive too many shitty-as-fuck people.
