Control yourself, OP! *slap, slap*

In all seriousness, I suggest not going anywhere fannish for a while. Avoid them until your done that thesis.

You have to do this for yourself, OP. Good luck!

I know it's easier said than done, but try to stay away from fanish places until you get done with your thesis. The fandom should be pretty active for at least the next three years, so you have plenty of time to be involved!

Why do addictions have to be so hard? Good luck, OP. Imagine Orcs are going to storm your home if you don't forge your Great Paper and bring it to the Hand of the Administration in time.

Ugh, I am with you on this. I'm trying to be all Adult and Responsible and finding a new job etc etc etc but I have become so obsessed with a new fandom and it's really ridiculous and bordering on unhealthy.

It is so much easier said than done, but try to just cut yourself off. Maybe say that you can go back after you finish your thesis. Good luck OP!

A question for everyone - recs

(Anonymous) 2013-01-20 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Where is the fandom mainly hanging out? What are some must-see interviews/materials and fan-made pictures, gifsets, etc. and must-read fics/discussions? I just watched the movie today, but I feel like trying to join the fandom after a month could be hopeless. I would be very grateful for any recs for anything Hobbit-related :(

(Except Sherlock cross-overs and race-bending fan-casts. I'm not interested in those things and I already saw some of them.)

Sorry, if this isn't the appropriate place to ask, OP.

I'd rate you higher but your too oblivious to be offensive.

Mostly on Tumblr, from what I can see.

Vulcanizemecaptain on Tumblr posts a lot of Hobbit-related EVERYTHING.

Uh...OP, don't read any of this yet. GET YOUR ASS AWAY FROM THIS OP. Sorry, it's just...you know, the secret.

I rec'd some fic here, but most of it's Thorin/Bilbo so if you don't like that...sorry. :( Maybe one day I'll put together recs for other pairings and gen, but I haven't read much of that yet.

As for interviews and the like, uh...I'd just do a search on youtube, or search on tumblr.

Which, btw, here's my Hobbit tag if you're interested. I reblog a lot of Hobbit stuff...

This is the kink meme, too. And...uh, that's pretty much it, I guess. The fandom is mostly on tumblr, so hopefully you're a fan.

Sherlock crosses are happening. I like the reincarnation fics (that is, Bilbo Baggins is John Watson's past life).

I feel you, OP. I'm writing my dissertation, and I've still signed up for a ficathon where I have to post something on a monthly basis. For shame, self.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-20 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
If you're on a Mac (though I think they've developed it for PCs) you can use SelfControl, an ironically named program that blocks internet pages of your choosing if you have no self control. I use it all the time; I've blacklisted all the fanfic sites, tumblr, facebook, livejournal and so on. The best thing is that you set the amount of time for them to be blocked, and then even if you shut down the program and delete it off your computer, it'll still be running till the clock runs out. Best way to get shit done!

For non-Mac users, there's also a program called 'Freedom' (oh ha ha) that's a bit less subtle and just prevents you from going online for a set amount a time.

Not my fandom but the exact same problem.

I hate myself for this ;A;

(Anonymous) 2013-01-20 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm gonna go by my own experience and say...it might not be because of the fandom. It's quite likely that some part of you just really doesn't want to work on it, and you're latching onto the fandom to give you something to do instead. If you couldn't get your hands on the fandom, you might have a big enough burst of motivation to get the ball rolling on your thesis, but you might just find a different distraction to avoid it.

Oh, man. I feel your pain, OP.

I have to finish my dissertation this semester (no worries; it's happening), and I know I should just eschew every damn thing for like three weeks and just be finally done with it. But what am I doing instead? Re-reading epic Trek reboot fic. LOL

(Anonymous) 2013-01-21 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
Can I recommend setting aside 1 or 2 hours a day for fandom and making sure after that time is up that you put it away and do what you need to? Sometimes scheduling and organization helps. Or make fandom a weekend thing?

I feel your pain, OP. Not the same fandom, but man right now that sounds so much more fun than sending out job applications. My current method of controlling things is to make myself send out three apps a day, then allow myself 30 minutes of 'whatever' time, repeat until I've applied to everything I can find for the day. I have to tempt myself with the prize of fandom fun to get things done sometimes.

Secrets like this make me feel old sometimes, but then I think back and remember that there were a lot of lazy people clogging up the system when I was in school. The difference is that now people are very open about it. If they aren't bragging about it, they're busy placing blame on the media they consume.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-21 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
I understand I had the same problem when I did my thesis but in a different fandom. Just remember there will be a ton of stuff waiting for you. If you really can't stay away, trying setting aside time out of the week to do fanish things, like Saturday morning or Friday night or something can help. Try to make it just one block of one day, something that you can look forward to (like a reward). That way you can devote the rest of your time to your thesis and other school work and you'll be getting a break which you will need trust me.

Welcome to club Lazy Procrastinators! You'll get a t-shirt once we get around to it.

But seriously, I have a similar problem and feel your pain. I tell myself I'm going to get stuff done today, and then I don't do it until the last minute. Just set some time aside each day to get your work done, because if you procrastinate like me you'll submit a subpar product. The pleasure you get from your fandom today is not worth the feeling of failure you'll have after you turn in a shoddy thesis tomorrow. Good luck, OP!

[personal profile] starry_starrrz 2013-01-21 01:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Man, have I been there.

When I have a deadline coming up I often block a lot of my fave fandom websites. The internet suddenly seems so boring I've no option but to write.
