Adventuring ladies recs!

(Anonymous) 2013-01-20 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Both for the OP to check out, and because hey, why not!
Personally, I'm mostly into books rather than TV/movies, so I'm only going to give a few:

Seconding Once Upon a Time above.

The Princess novels by Jim Hines. Cinderella, Snow White, and Sleeping Beauty as essentially action spies going on awesome adventures.

I'm *certain* at least one of the Valdemar trilogies involved a group of women adventuring, but which ones specifically escapes me. Oh! The Tarma and Kethry books! (Oathbound, Oathblood, Oathbreakers) And also By the Sword.

And to go old-school, both Xena and Buffy are on Netflix, I think.

Anyone else?

Legend of the Seeker. Not an all female team and you have to wait for the best female friendship full of UST till the second season, but it's really awesome and I would recommend it to anyone who loves ladies having kick-ass adventures. Plus, there are like three or four all-female organizations outside of the main team?

I second this! The second season is awesome for women protagonists and antagonists.

Can I do an anti-rec for the series it's based on?

DO NOT READ SWORD OF TRUTH.

Dealing With Dragons and two of its sequels by Patricia C. Wrede (last name potentially spelled wrong, just as heads up). The last book (Talking to Dragons) is in a masculine POV and so different from the first three it almost doesn't feel related to them, but if you enjoy the first three, you'll need to read the last to finish the story. But definitely at least pick up Dealing.

Not adventuring, exactly, but Gail Simone's run on Birds of Prey is a superhero team of women going on missions, fighting baddies, eating Chinese food.

Thread OP: Oh man, I should have added that. BoP is one of my favorite mainstream comics ever. (Also, Babs and Dinah are totally girlfriends. You will never convince me otherwise.)

Almost all of Hayao Miyazaki's films fit the bill. The Last Unicorn is also very good.

There's Stardust which has a male lead, but also some good female protagonists and antagonists. And in the same Gaiman vein, there's also Coraline and Mirror Mask. Actually, really reccing Mirror Mask. It's somewhat depressing that most of what I can think of are children's films. Like "oh they'll grow out of it when they're older". Pan's Labyrinth stars a child but is definitely not a children's film.

On the historical side, there's this French film called A Very Long Engagement, about a girl who goes on a sort of quest to find her missing WWI fiance. Also on the foreign side, there's this Scandinavian film that was dubbed into English called the Polar Bear King, it's like the tale of Eros and Psyche, but set up north and it's a witch that cursed the king. And a whole portion of the movie has the king kidnapped by the witch, and the girl has to go on a quest to rescue him.

If you don't mind mini-series there's Syfy's Tin Man and Alice. The 10th Kingdom is also pretty cool. If you're somewhat familiar with Discworld, one of the miniseries adaptations did Hogfather, which stars Susan Sto-Helit, the granddaughter of death.

And I hope that's good for now.

It's old, but Sabriel! Or, even more obscure, The Ancient One and The Merlin Effect, by T.A. Barron. He had one more, Heartlight, but I've never read it.

animated version of the Snow Queen

(has English subtitles if you click on "CC")

a small girl braving Northern Europe to rescue her childhood friend/crush

Gunnerkrigg Court:

Main characters are female, and go on some pretty cool adventures

http://fribergthorelli.com/wbk/

Same as above, but more slow paced. Also, kind of surreal horror

http://girlyyy.com/go/1

Same as above, but wackier and probably not for children

Comics: Alan Moore's Promethea series. Five volumes, about an all-female superhero group. It degenerates into Esotericism For Dummies: Illustrated Edition for about two and a half volumes but fortunately I eat that stuff up with a spoon, and there's one creepy older man/younger woman scene, but for the most part it's made of wonderful and lesbians. Issue 30 makes almost everyone shed tears of awesome, I am not making this up.

Books; anything by Tricia Sullivan but especially Double Vision and Sound Mind. They go together; the main character is a sci-fic fangirl who believes she can see another planet when she watches TV. Sullivan uses all the sci-fi mechanics - alien wars, other realities, biopunk and such - to explore the things that are close to us, like TV, marketing, capitalism, pop music.

Movies; two of the six main characters in Cloud Atlas are WOC, and they're both amazing. Luisa is an investigative journalist who's discovered a massive conspiracy, and Somni is a replicant who's becoming self-aware. I love them both svfm.

ALSO PONYO, OBVIOUSLY.

Bodacious Space Pirates. Yes, I know the title makes it sound like some kind of skeezy fanservice-fest, but it's very much not. Basically, plucky teenage heroine Marika learns her absent dad is a space pirate (though in this universe it's technically more like privateer) and upon his death she is now heir to his ship and crew and gets to go on adventures in space and such. While the show's a bit uneven at times, one big thing it has going for it is a bunch of great, competent female characters (including a canon lesbian couple), and despite being a show filled with girls in miniskirts in deep space there is not so much as a single pantyshot to be seen.

Can't forget about the lovely Gemma Doyle Trilogy!

A tad bit more romantic than I would like, but it's not the main focus by far. All the main characters are female (and two of them are gay), and it takes place in victorian england! It's about magic and adventures and it's really good.

How did I not mention Final Fantasy XIII?

It's not perfect and the sequel should be avoided at all costs, but oh god, the adventuring ladies.

Digger by Ursula Vernon, available online for free at diggercomic.com.

It's about a wombat (the eponymous heroine) who manages to get herself good and lost, and rapidly builds from her attempting to get herself home into something quite a bit more epic. Well written, beautifully illustrated, and won a Hugo award this year.

And there is definitely a section of old-fashioned quest journeying where the three gendered characters in the group are all female.

Seanan McGuire's October Daye series. It's about a fae knight who's also a private detective, so it straddles the line between fantasy adventure and pulpy case novels, with a bit of courtly politics thrown in, especially in the later novels. It really hits its stride around book 3, imo, which is when the main character gets better at acting rather than reacting (which is a deliberate part of her character arc - the first book opens with her going through some pretty nasty trauma, and it takes her a while to retake her agency and stop reflexively shutting down), but the first two are still pretty fun, and lay some incredibly important groundwork.

The Hero and the Crown and The Blue Sword by Robin McKinley.
I mean, she writes amazing stuff about girls in general, but these books feature a warrior princess of to kill the dragon all the knights couldn't, among others.
