Watch Once Upon a Time then. Plenty of women being good and evil and going on adventures in a fairy tale setting.

Personally, I don't care if The Hobbit is a sausagefest. It's a good story, with interesting characters. That's all I care about.

Adventuring ladies recs!

(Anonymous) 2013-01-20 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Both for the OP to check out, and because hey, why not!
Personally, I'm mostly into books rather than TV/movies, so I'm only going to give a few:

Seconding Once Upon a Time above.

The Princess novels by Jim Hines. Cinderella, Snow White, and Sleeping Beauty as essentially action spies going on awesome adventures.

I'm *certain* at least one of the Valdemar trilogies involved a group of women adventuring, but which ones specifically escapes me. Oh! The Tarma and Kethry books! (Oathbound, Oathblood, Oathbreakers) And also By the Sword.

And to go old-school, both Xena and Buffy are on Netflix, I think.

Anyone else?

I'm 100% with you on this. PJ inserted so much bullshit into the movies, genderbending would be actually cool AND better than general character assasination.

I kinda agree. I can totally enjoy stories with all-male casts, especially when the stories were written decades ago, but I really, really, really wish more stories with ensemble casts had women characters just 'cause. Not because they need to be women, not because there's any deeper meaning in them being women, but just because.

(Also, to be honest, I prefer all-male casts to casts that include women, but whose roles are to be women.)

Aren't Dwarf women supposed to be indistinguishable from the men? You could just pretend that some of them are female. IIRC only a few of them are ever explicitly referred to by masculine pronouns or titles like "brother" in the movie.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-20 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
SAME. I was going to make a secret about it, too. I do love LotR and all, but there are what... 3 women? Four if you count the Hobbit lady Same fancies, but that's such a tiny roll it's ridiculous.

I mean really... that's just pathetic. :/

don't be silly. changing genders (to female, the other way around is ok) violates the innate integrity of the original manuscript.

never mind story changes, character changes or changes to race (but only to caucasian! the other way around is not ok)

(Anonymous) 2013-01-20 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know if this is too "purist" but LOTR and The Hobbit are basically expanding on Tolkien's experiences in war. Something generally only fought by men.

I agree. One example of this done well is the new Battlestar Galactica. I think making Starbuck female added some nice layers to the show. (And I own the original on DVD, so it's not that I don't know the original version.)

It's not the Hobbit's fault it was written in the 30's.

My university did a play of The Hobbit where most of the characters where genderflipped due to mostly women auditioning. It was an interesting twist, I thought.

Anyway, I tend to not care for genderbending, and I'm not interested in this movie either way, but it's stupid that people are jumping on you. There's nothing wrong with wanting more representation.

Moment of silence for the epic wank that would have ensued had some of the dwarves had been flipped.

It would have been glorious.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-20 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't say that I agree. I don't want a strong female character who is only that way because she was a dude originally. I want one who was always a chick. Creating more female characters by just gender flipping male ones is cheap and unsatisfying imo

The canon is male-dominated due to many reasons, therefore any adaptation is going to be the same and I can accept this. I don't need genderswapping just to appease the wimmens.

That said, they have made changes to appease the wimmens; Arwen and Galadriel's roles were expanded to include more screentimne for women and they created a whole new female character for the Hobbit. That's more than enough pandering for my taste.
